Good article, the one thing that caught me by surprise was that Cassandra swears. :o
Not that I'm against swearing... but I just didn't expect it in DA. The writing seemed to be above that.

What does that mean? Swearing is a means of expression and is used by great writers in great works all the time. Besides, Alistair swears in Origins (in polite conversation, too).

The newer UI screens look pretty snazzy.

Regarding swearing, I liked the way the Deadwood guys explained why "realistic swearing" didn't work:

Instead, it was decided that the show would use current profanity in order for the words to have the same impact on modern audiences as the blasphemous ones did back in the 1870s.

Basically, swear words are used for impact. And if they don't have any, they come off as comical. A modern swearword like the one Cassandra uses has the appropriate impact for modern audiences.

Look very much the same to me... wonder what does "5% defense" and "3% armour" mean though, on the lvl.15 Hawke screen.

Also you don't get to call your game dark and gritty if half the characters don't spout expletatives in a cockney accent.

If the language in DA2 could be half as grandiosely filthy as it is in Deadwood, I would be a very happy gamer.

Off the top of my head, he calls Morrigan a b*tch when you have the conversation with him about the companions. There are other instances (mostly the word ass, IIRC).

Oghren swore all the sodding time

Did he use words that would be filtered on most message boards? If so I missed that.

This could explain why I had no idea what you were talking about.

I think they have a better use of space, with the giant heads, than they did previously. Also not sure if it was this preview or another that gave us the screenshot that didn't have the ginormous health bars, since the UI doesn't scale with resolution.

It's why Deadwood rocks. If people go "Smushzelspush! How dare you?" or whatever made up word would be setting appropriate, it totally wrecks the scene (for me at least) because of the laughter.

How is it that this rogue gets Carver in the Lothering sequence?

I think it's the exaggerated sequence and Carver / Bethany is based on gender. Bethany for Male in the exaggerated, Carver for Female in the exaggerated?

I assumed it was the non exaggerated, as rather than dressing like he's in some crazy metal band and wielding a battleth, tearing through swathes of the enemy, he's just some guy in shabby leather running away.

According to Darrah, the level cap is now 50, FWIW.

Zombie Carver

Which would be pretty interesting character development if you think about it.  He'd be all decaying and moaning before your eyes.  You'd try to help him, but can't, and he'd get all depressed or what not that his limb just suddenly fell off - not to mention that he has to eat brains now for nurishment

Does Cassandra actually say "bull****", or was that a paraphrase? Genuinely curious.

She says it. To be more precise, she says 'bullsheet'.

Okay, thanks. Now you mention the "sheet" thing, I think I may have heard it before and simply forgotten. In any case, that's good news to my ears. While I'm the last person who thinks swearing makes something more "mature", it does add a certain degree of authenticity to a setting, I find.

I'm hoping for more Maker/Andraste curses, too.

"Maker's balls!"

Oh, the way and location in which she says it makes perfect sense, and is completely part of the narrative.

Exactly. "Occasional" and "impactful" are our watchwords when it comes to profanity. Even then, we try to avoid things that are maybe a tad too modern, but that's pretty much subject to personal interpretation. So it's our interpretation, but we at least try to be consistent about it throughout the entire game.

If I could have them swear in iambic pentameter, though, I'd definitely do it a lot more. :)
