I downloaded Mass Effect 2 from Direct2Drive and successfully installed the game. It is fully patched and plays fine on my Dell XPS 630 Desktop: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB).
Unfortunately, I am unable to save my games. It allows me to select "New Save" and shows the spinning cd graphic, but it does not create a save file. I looked in the Program File and the Save folder remains empty after several attempts to save games.
Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

Don't know what would be causing the issue but I would suggest giving the folder full access to everyone. Also my save games do not go to the Program Files folder. They go to the My Documents (or Documents) folder. I would check your my documents for either a Bioware folder or a My Games/Bioware folder and see if there is a save folder in there and make it full access to everyone.

I checked and there are no saved files in the Documents>Bioware>Mass Effect 2>Save folder either. I took your advice and opened access to the folder, but with no discernible effect.

Any firewall active? If you do, I would disable your Ethernet adapter then disable your firewall try saving after that. If it works add MassEffect2.exe to your allow list.

It's already on the exception list for the firewall.

Does the quick-save/ load still work i.e. F5 (save) and F9 (load)?

This is a MAJOR BUG. If My Documents is not in its normal place, ie you moved it to another drive or folder location, then you have to create a folder in the SAVE folder which matches your characters name (John Shepard).
Also, you can't save the game until AFTER you speak to the illusive man. It should put save files in your SAVE folder then which you can then drag to your character folder.
I just notice another BUG associated with this problem and that your achievements are not saved from session to session. I don't know how this effects replay, but I'll find out soon enough.

Also, you may need to fix the save setting and achievement by adding another folder. Check this link: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/5541485/1#5547610
