There is a dialogue option that has Shepard say he notices a few new things about himself that Cerberus added. So I guess you can just tell yourself they gave biotics to you... ?



This might not be as detailed as you would like but it might push you in the right direction.

Yeah.I get disappointed when I do something that ruins the storyline for me. Like in the beginning when Jacob tells Shepard he's been in a coma for two years and you respond to it. By the time you regroup with Miranda you've already accepted it...then, on accident, you pick the response that expresses surprise when Miranda tells you what you and Jacob already went over. Maybe it's just me, but I get kinda frustrated with that.

Hi Joshua, I faced a similar question myself...in my case, it was an Inflitrator turning into a Sentinel (who kept her tech skills, but aquired some biotic powers).

The canonical answer, I have learned, was that Shepard was exposed to eezo at age 14, thus he/she had some latent biotic powers that didn't manifest until later.  Or, in ME2, it was simply a Cerberus upgrade.

However, for my RPing my own character, I wanted to include something I experienced in-game to at least "trigger" that change, to explain why she didn't have biotics before.  These are just my ideas:

1. The Beacon from ME1 - it psychically transferred knowledge into Shepard, which really screwed up her mind.  The original purpose was to deliver a warning of the Reapers, but the unintended consequence was that it triggered some latent biotic abilities.  In my case, I gave my Infiltrator a bonus skill, Lift, which I only invested a skill point in after Eden Prime to reflect this.  The idea was that when she floated before the Beacon, it was her Lift power manifesting itself for the 1st time.  I thought it was a great way to personalise my Shepard.

2. The Cypher from Shiala - similar to the Beacon, it was a psychic knowledge transfer, but it was even more substantial since it contained the very essence of being Prothean.  I recall Shiala herself had this quizzical look on her face (which at 1st made me think she betrayed me somehow).  Maybe she noticed something odd about my Shepard's ability to "embrace eternity" there.  Later on, Liara helped Shepard understand that knowledge and commented how she found her strong-willed, that a lesser mind would not have been able to handle that.  I interpretted this as how Shepard, in order to adapt to all these psychic transfers, awakened some psychic potential.

3. The trauma of dying in the ME2 opening - Jack received her biotic powers from experimentation, but a lot of it was induced by pain.  Shepard had a pretty gruesome death, which was probably extremely painful.  That experience might have unlocked biotic abilities.

TL;DR - the canonical answers are probably that Shepard got eezo'd at age 14 or Cerberus implanted biotic powers.  My 3 points above are just factors I thought made sense for turning my Infiltrator into a Sentinel, but I have been slammed for these as they were just personal interpretations for my own RP (but I thought these more fun...it was my own Shepard, after all).

Its up to you to figure out how to make sense of it.

If you go from soldier to adept/engineer/sentinel, you really have to make something up for yourself to satisfy yourself.

Go from soldier to infiltrator/vanguard can be more easily explained away due to retaining the combat focus. Infiltrator (tech) skills gained as a result of all the cybernetic implants in your body. Vanguard (biotic) as a result of LX-6 implants in your brain.

Apart from the line about "noticing a few upgrades", there is no way in the story to explain the shift. This is where your imagination comes into it.

Well, one of my characters was a blonde, overly-gaunt faced Infiltrator who turned into a red haired, chubby Adept. And everyone was still 'SHEPARD!' so I guess, a wizard did it?

Then again, another one of mine was a ME1 Vanguard, turned ME2 Soldier with Reave or Slam whenever retrained. I like to think that fits really well as Cerberus could have upgraded more combat elements but left some pretty awesome biotics.

Otherwise, seeing as they rebuilt she/he from 'meat'n'tubes' they could have laced the new body with eezo. Seeing how that effected unborn babies downwind of a spill, concentrated exposure might purposely create a biotic. Begs the question why Cerberus went 'We need Shepard just as they were before the explosion', then went and totally changed their class. But hey, its getting pretty obvious now that all Cerberus projects either go wrong or are just stupid.

This seems like a thread better suited to the Storyline forum.

That said, BioWare included the feature so that folks who had their "cannon" Shepard (the one that did every side quest and got level 60 in ME1) could import that character into ME2 multiple times, without being stuck with one class/appearance. The re-customization can't really be explained in the story, so it's up to you to decide whether it is immersion breaking or not. If it is, then there is always the New Game option (start a fresh Shepard), or importing a different character from ME1.

While it's never said in-game, I always just took it as whatever class you are, that's what The Illusive Man wanted you to be. If you were a soldier in ME1 and then change to a engineer in ME2, then that's how TIM wanted it. It's all part of the Lazarus Project. I guess that's the easiest answer.



I agree about the comment when Shep and Team Cerberus are on the trip to meet TIM and Shep acts like he/she just heard that he/she has been out for 2 years. That bugged me when I picked that convo option. Maybe bad short-term memory comes with being rebuilt.

On a slightly different topic, I like the idea of Shepard being a soldier then being turned to a biotic. TIM could have thought "Hey, if you thought Shepard was dangerous before, I just put biotic implants in him, tell that to the Reapers; oh and add a suck it". Yes, I believe he said that word for word. Ha ha! But in some what all seriousness I believe that could also help.
