The ME1 vs 2 debated has been kicked around for a long time.

Most people, myself included, agree the actual gameplay of ME2 was improved.  It was all the little things, the "feel"of the original, that was lost.  Things like the galaxy map, exploration, character encounters, the inventory, and expansive backdrops.

Well, check out this video from E3 2006, the original vision of the mass effect universe.

The combat is laughably simple, but the music, the galaxy map!, the goals of the game, the expanse of the citadel...these are the things ME3 needs to nail.  Bioware should heed their vision of the game while still evolving the intense combat and sequences from the original.

Because while ME2 is an excellent game, and tangibly superior to ME1, it was the overall feel and vision of ME1 and its universe that made it so unique and great.

That beta seriously looks better than ME1 and ME2. The combat looks awesome, allowing you to take control of your team mates like in origins. The galaxy map is boss aswell. I wonder why they got rid of all this cool stuff.

^I think they took that aspect out because it might have felt disjointed going from one character to another. Who honestly knows. Blame testers i guess.

Err...moving a toy ship around is nothing that like that.  The beta galaxy map looks awesome and cool to move around in.

ME1 did not have a ship moving around.

You playin' a different game than everybody else? Or was crystal meth used in the construction of your house?

The only difference is there are more things blinking, some random and unreadable words come up when you select a planet. I fail to see how there is any other significant thing going on with the galaxy map. The change is so minor, I see no reason for it to come up.

I remember this. I found that they replaced Dark Energy with biotic a little strang. If they could combine the beta and ME2 combat it would be beautiful.

It's simply visually appealing especially when you're fully zoomed out and it's broken up into those segments.

The galaxy map looks okay, but I wouldn't die over not having it.

It actually looks like something a space navigator might be interfacing with rather than a kid's toy.  It has a sense of being fluid, slick, and fitting perfectly with the look and feel of the universe

Since you've just described some the differences between the demo map and the current map, I guess I don't need to tell you that you've contradicted your first post saying that the map was already like that...

"This map is clearly the same as the other map because they're both maps despite the fact that the only difference between maps is how they look/you interface with them, thus the map is the same because both it and the ME1 map are maps and have planets"

You know what, I actually do like the Beta map better after looking at it again. Heh, I think I need to go to sleep, pointless arguing. Shame on me..... <_<

The map does look "cool" but it is a very busy interface, I'd wager we'd get tired of it after a while. It's easy enough to get lost in ME2 when you can't see all the planets in a solar system at once; that UI would make it worse. IMHO.

Jumping around between characters ala DA:O is something I have very mixed feelings about. I'm glad they dropped it, I found myself accidentally swapping characters in mid-combat which is not a good thing.

I wonder what the subplot around the Salarian/Asari was...

The info only pops up when the user highlights it or clicks.

I don't miss that feature either. Glad it didn't get included.

Huh. I like the look of the galaxy map. I don't know what it is exactly, but... there's just something appealing about it. Though I do admittedly love ME2's.
