Really? I felt the feel improved massively in ME2. Felt less...nerdy and more like an epic and dramatic tale. I'm also a big fan of making things gritty.

I don't see what's so incredibly amazing about the map. Had I not seen this forum I wouldn't have thought it special.

ME2 did feel more epic and dramatic...but that's not necessarily a good thing. All mediums of entertainment now seem obsessed with "epicness" and a slick presentation. I like the attempt at grittiness in ME2 as well, but what made ME1 special was the unique sci fi vision it brought to the table. ME2 is amped up, but in many ways (music, presentation, cutscenes) it just feels like every other action thiller out there (see Halo, Gears of War). I like those sorts of games, but I LOVED mass effect because of its uniqueness. Call me a nerd, but ME1 was a special game experience. ME2 is a better game in many ways, but it lacked that unique quality, a quality that shines through in the developers original aspirations.

The galaxy map is cool because it looks like a real navigation interface from the future (think Minority Report or Johnny Pneumatic). The ME1 galaxy map was cool, but the ME2 version I thought was awful and didn't seem to fit into the game at all.
