I was just wondering how many of you have actually prevented Wrex from dying in your first playthrough of Mass Effect. Whether it be through doing his sidequest or charming/intimidating him.

Edit: Also what was your reaction when you saw Wrex die or first heard he could die?

I failed to do so, unfortunately. I hadn't leveled up Charm high enough and I was planning on doing Wrex's mission (And most of the side quests) after Virmire. Soooo Ashley shot him. And I had to load an earlier save so that I could change the way I leveled up in order to pour points in Charm.

My first time through I played as a solider and put alot of points into charm/intimidate and was able to talk him down.  It was pretty intense; I was literaly shaking afterwards. My second playthrough I played an infiltrator and didn't have any points in charm/intimidate other than what you get for P/R points and didn't know about his quest giving you an out.  I dreaded doing that mission 'cause I thought I was going to have to kill him.

Yep. I didn't do his mission before Virmire, but my first playthrough I poured as many points as I could spare into charm/intimidate (since on the stats screen they promised extra dialogue options, and I was intrigued by this spiffy, multi-dimentional dialogue choice system) and Wrex accompanied me through the Virmire compound unscathed.

I later found he could die, and was very surprised, particularly in conjunction with the other Virmire choice. Heavy stuff.

I was a noob, and yet because I read up about the game before buying it on wikipedia, I knew that there was a chance he could die.

After that when I realized I liked him, I asked a friend who had played the game how to get Wrex to survive, he told me 'paragon and charm' so I did just that.

The encounter on Virmire actually did shock me as it came up unexpectedly, but I still got through with no difficulty. I was terrified of failure but I succeeded, as I have every other time since.

If I, as a noob, could do it... everyone could.

By chance I went to Virmire last and had my Charm talent full. So, it was never an option for me to shoot Wrex. But, I have to say that I was quite shocked to see Wrex as a potential danger to the mission, so I was very pleased with being able to charm him. I am still on my first playthrough, currently fighting Saren.

I tend to max out social skills when I play rpgs, so I had no trouble convincing him to destroy the cloning facility with me.

I did first time through. It's a Bioware rpg, talking skills should be taken. At least that was what past experience led me to believe.

Not the first time, no.

I played it straight through with no guides or info and had taken pretty much equal renegade and paragon options and had neither the charm nor the intimidation to save him, and hadn't found the armor yet because it didn't seem like a priority at the time.

I was pretty upset when Ashley blew him away, and wished I could have yelled at her for it, but then I did end up leaving her to die a few minutes later and I'm sure it wasn't in ANY way related to my feelings about Wrex.

I did.

But that was just pure coincidence...

Some of my friends couldn't save him.

Years of roleplaying experience served me well. Not only had I already done Wrex's mission before Virmire, I was playing a solid Paragon on my first playthrough. I had no problem talking him down, although it didn't occur to me for a long time why Ashley had moved over there. When I finally did a playthrough where I didn't have enough charm/intimidate and she shot him, I was completely shocked.

I failed the first time. I tried to reason with him but didn't have high enough charm or intimidate and Ashley shot him after some back and forth arguing with Wrex. Really annoyed me i knew the **** **** was waiting for a chance like that to kill an alien in cold blood.

You can also save Wrex if you haven't recruited Liara and Garrus by Virmire.

I did. It really isn't that hard. I mean, you have to fail at doing his personal quest *and* fail to raise your conversation skill sufficiently to miss out on the chance to save him. I'm pretty sure that some statistics released a while back said that Wrex survived a large majority of ME1 savegames, though I can't find a link.

I did. I didn't see a downside to saving the life of one of the last krogan battlemasters in existence and having them owe a debt of gratitude to you.

Same thing happened to me. On the second playthrough I was able to intimidate, and I was able to charm him on the third.

I saved him the first time since I had done his side quest and had been able to talk him down. I had actually already done 3 playthroughs, saving him every time, before I learned that Ashley could indeed kill him if things were not done right.

I was pretty shocked, and a little ticked off at Ashley (I guess for no real reason) for being able to do that, lol. But I've been lucky through all 12 of my playthroughs on ME1, Wrex survived them all.

Saved each time. Firstly with Charm and ever since with his loyalty quest.

I did it the first time; I did his quest so I didn't have to worry about much trouble persuading him.

My first time through, Ashley shot him.

I was stunned and a little sad. But at the same time, I thought it was very cool that it could happen. I appreciate a game that has real consequences.

I wasn't mad at Ash for shooting Wrex. She probably saved Shep's life. Couldn't bring myself to leave her on Virmire after that.

After that though, Wrex always lived--all eight or nine times.

Wouldn't it be sweet to finish ME3 with the alien bro/sis team that has been with Shepard all the way?
