You know, I was a total noob at that game. Total. But, I knew about the risk of death Wrex faced.... why?

Wikipedia.

Prior to buying the game, I looked it up on Wikipedia and I read up on the squad mates, I remembered something about Wrex and a facility and possible death. I then looked around the web, talked to a friend or two and asked about it, found out about paragon and charm and intimidate and then I worked round the clock to get enough. I finally show up on Virmire, the confrontation happens and, even though it took me utterly by surprise (I didn't realize Virmire was the level in question, I freaked out when Kirrahe mentioned the 'Krogan Army' bit because I realized *gulp* this was it) and then I worked it out and Wrex lived a breathed a sigh of relief.

Later I found out about the armor thing and it made the confrontation even easier (albeit less dramatic, but easier). So yeah, I don't just buy games. I look them up, talk to friends about them and I look up reviews. I was ten times a noob at that point, both to RPG's and to Bioware in general. But I figured it out because I had looked things up and prepared accordingly.

You could have done likewise, you didn't. Not going to fault you for that, just going to point it out. Let it be clear, this isn't a criticism on you in particular nor an accusation or a mean spirited hatchet job and I apologize if it seems that way.
This is just me explaining how easy it really is to know about the Wrex confrontation even before your first actual playthrough of the game. If I could do it, I see no reason why anyone else couldn't.

EDIT: More importantly, my main point is, even if you aren't AWARE of it, Ashley/Wrex/Shepard's actions are all still within your control. Regardless of whether you were aware of that or not, they still were.

However, I do remember fInding out Ashley would have shot him if I failed, one of many reasons Ash is at the bottom of my list of favorite characters.

Well, if we're condemning characters for stuff they don't  do in our personal playthroughs, keep in mind that Shep too can kill Wrex, and be completely psychopathic about it to boot (just go the "Shoot him as soon as possible, then have the body dumped in the swamp" route). So logically, you also ought to dislike Shep, and to a greater degree.

"One of many reasons"

And yes, I do judge characters based on all of their potential dialogues and actions. It didn't happen in my first playthrough but that doesn't mean it can't inform my view of Ash's character. Ashley will kill Wrex, despite the player or Shepard's wishes if he can't be talked down. It's a fact.

Shepard's actions are mostly in the hands of the player. No I don't always like or agree with those potential choices, but I can't complain about my psychotic ruthless colonist killing Wrex, when I made the choice for her to do so.

At least not, you know, logically.

I saved him and cannot recall if I did do his side quest or not. I believe I may have skipped it. Regardless, I have never finished a file with Wrex dead, not one. And I will be damned to start now.

Edit: No, scratch that. I have the strategy guide. So yes I did his quest. Brain freeze there, xD

Saved Wrex the first time and proud of it! In fact the punishment for not saving Wrex should be somebody breaking into your house and snapping your disk in half.

I did.

I'm a completionist, and in most RPGs end up doing a ton of side quests, if not all. So by the time I had gotten to Virmire Wrex was loyal because I had done his family armor quest. That, and in RPGs where some form of persuasion comes into play I usually invest heavily in it. The main draw in RPGs for me is story so I hate having dialogue options locked.

i wish i had known, otherwise i would have. didn't have the high enough renegade either. but i remember at the time, i wasn't too fond of wrex, so it felt BA to take him down with one blow.

LOL i liked the game so much that i did every quest i could, maped out and marked every survey, every thing of every thing. Wrex was one of my favourites too, i talked him down first time and the other six times after that too, i was shocked when my friend told me that he killed Wrex because Wrex questioned him...... i was like WTF!

I agree, but it would sadly not be realistical. So I will gladly settle for that those who let him die just getting one less requitable squadmember in ME3.

I didn't in my first playthrough. I was talking to him and all of a sudden, Ashley shoots him. I remember thinking, "WTF?"

I was more careful in the other playthroughs.

Yeah, I did.

I have this thing where I max out speech/persuade options on every RPG I play.

Saved him through his sidequest (but later also found out that I had enough Intimidate points - which I wouldn't have taken though because the sentence there made no sense to me. --> ARGH Paragon/Renegade system needs a rework for ME3)

Also 2 of my friends lost Wrex on their first playthrough even though they had enough persuasion points but (as well as me) didn't know that using the blue or red line is always the best option.

I didn't know how/if that family armor quest had any impact, but I had enough Paragon/Renegade on both playthroughs to not kill Wrex. Why anyone would want to deliberately kill the badass is beyond me.

I lost him, reloaded until I found the correct options to save him. being a completionist sort of player, I did get him his armor, so I just needed to find the correct dialogue.

I happened to bump into the side quest for his armour while looking around. No real effort on my part.

I'm glad I could save him though he was in my squad almost 100% of the game.

I didn't realize you could kill him until years later on these very forums (my first foray into the world of forums)...

So 'saved' him. Every time.

I don't remember if I saved him the first time, but I saved him more often than not in the many many MANY times I played ME1. Only my most evilest/douchiest Shepards gunned him down, some even let Ash do it.

I have saved in him in all six or seven of my ME1 play through's.

I saved him, didnt even have to use paragon or renegade. His family quest is more than enough to save him.

Ahhh, that explains why in my later ones I didn't get paragon/renegade (blue/red) come up.

Yes, I did. I always put points into my persuasion skills because I always like to be able to pick whatever dialogue option I want. Even if I hadn't, though, I am also meticulous about doing quests, so I did his sidequest and would have been able to talk him down anyway.

@OP,

Sadly, not I. But I did it in my 7th playthrough.

@OP. Saved him. I'm pretty thorough in my gameplaying, so I had done his side quest and it was really easy not to kill him. I have never killed him in any of my ME1 playthroughs.
