If you really really really love ME2 and think it's the best game/franchise ever, you can buy it all. Why penny pinch if you really love something? This is especially true if you recently bought it, since I believe ME2 is only like $20, or if you bought it used, should have been cheap. So with all the DLC, big and small added up, should be the full cost of a regular game (plus tax). And if you haven't do so, connect online and get the patch, since it makes the mining part of the game (most tedious and boring) go faster.
That said, if you haven't played Mass Effect 1 yet, you must buy it, especially if you love the story (and it's just $15). Even though ME1's combat is poor, the story is top notch and some default ME2 import choices suck (Wrex is dead in ME2 and he is one of the best characters, but lives if you save him in ME1 and import your save).
If you want to penny pinch, which I can understand (college student... broke college student), here are some tips from my point of view:
1. Cerberus Network code ($15): here is what you get
- Zaeed: another team member and his loyalty mission, a heavy weapon, an achievement; he's also useful in combat and a badass (Renegade)
- Normandy Crash Site: short mission but useless unless you are sentimental with the original Normandy
- Cerberus Armor and Shotgun: mediocre armor (with no helmet toggle) but one of the game's best long-range shotguns
- Arc Projector: awesome and useful heavy weapon
- Firewalker Pack: subpar vehicle missions
Summary: depends on your value of $15, but the best items are a new squadmember, shotgun, and heavy weapon. Buy it if you got the game for cheap.2. Lair of the Shadow Broker ($10): a 2/3 hour storyline that has some of the best level design and cinematic moments that rival the best of ME2 (and 5 achievements);
required reading, nuff said.
3. Overlord ($7): set of missions (and 2 achievements) that are just for an
awesome story, so if you are into story and plot, go for it.
4. Kasumi: Stolen Memory ($7): another cool squadmember, her loyalty mission, and an achievement. The loyalty mission is lengthy and good, and includes a new long range SMG. So if a
new member and the best SMG in the game sound worth it, go for it.
Those are the main/big DLC. Here are little items packs, no missions or squadmembers, just weapons and such:
5. Firepower Pack ($2):
best item DLC; gives you some of the best weapons in the game immediately and are meant to change things up weapon wise. Includes a strong pistol with percise aiming (think Resident Evil 4), a long range shotgun, and a precise assault rifle.
Arguable the best weapons of their categories.6. Aegis Pack ($2): just a set of interchangable armor pieces (but with some of the best stat boosts) and a sniper rifle; not really worth it unless a die hard fan/completionist.
7. Equalizer Pack ($2): 2 helmets, same advice as Aegis Pack.
8. Alternate Appearance Pack ($2): alternate outfits for Jack, Garrus, and Thane. Kind of a rip off UNLESS Garrus' smashed up armor bugs you, because this DLC has a set of
fixed, cool looking armor for Garrus. Google screenshots to see if you like the alternate armors. If not, don't get it.
Sorry for the amount of text, but I hope it helps you make an educated decision. So, if I had a gun to my head to buy one big DLC and one small DLC, I would buy Lair of the Shadow Broker and the Firepower Pack. Also, if you are going to buy Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, and Kasumi: Stolen Memories, play in reverse order as the order of how good they are (worse to best, relatively speaking as they are all awesome): Kasumi, then Overlord, then Lair of the Shadow Broker.
