I usually play normal (in almost all computer games), mostly because I am more interested in the story and also, I often have the feeling, that increasing the difficulty will just make the fights last longer, not make them more interesting.

Highest difficulty is usually a bit different (I haven't tried in Mass Effect), because I just don't have the reflexes for that any more (too old ;)).

In ME1 I didn't really have a difficulty. Didn't play it enough, finished it on normal, veteran, hardcore and insanity. If fact from memory didn't you have to unlock the harder difficulties? In ME2 did the same thing but only play insanity now. It's well balanced unlike ME1 where 95% of the game was very easy (but quite slow and tedious) and he other 5% of the game was very difficult.

My first game was hardcore. Insanity since then. I tried normal for the first mission once, but I hated it. It was far too easy. I usually play adepts and I can't have fun on less than insanity. I don't even consider myself good at shooters, I rode the pause button(shift key) a lot, I'm actively trying to use it as little as possible now and it has added the challenge back.

I usually play Hardcore. On insanity you have to focus to much on what's the most effective imo (especially since i'm not very good :P), on hardcore you can just pick which you think is fun and you die less (I have a trauma after that anoying ME1 Death Scene...)

I tend to fluctuate between Insanity and Normal. Out of the two I'd probably say Normal is my preferred difficulty. Ultimately I've never been totally happy with how biotics work on Insanity and playing an Adept on Normal feels like a straight upgrade to how they worked in Mass Effect, as oppose to playing like a very different class. If I'm playing my infiltrator I tend to just stick with insanity as they don't play any differently.

1st playthrough of any game, I always play on normal and then attempt higher difficulties on subsequent playthroughs. If things get too hard, then I am not too proud to lower the difficulty.

I start with hardcore or veteran if it’s a class I'm not use to yet and are having trouble with then bump it up to insanity after a few missions once I get the hang of it.
I mostly play on insanity.

1st playthrough on Veteran (the medium setting), I always start on medium - games are designed with that difficulty level in mind.

2nd on Insanity and I never changed since. Unlike most games, hardest ME2 difficulty level doesn't require having to kill enemies a dozen times.
On Insanity you can still OSOK enemies (with specific gear of course); defenses add extra tactical flavor - all in all, Insanity offers best gaming experience imho. If Shep uses his/her weapons, powers and squad combined; Shep can still fight in godlike epic style - the way it's meant to be! B)

ME1: Usually Hardcore (Insanity is kinda tedious on ME1).

ME2: Always Insanity.

Even as a late-comer, I've been trying to take things slow.. so Veteran (normal got too easy really fast) for the last couple months, just to get a feel of the 6 basic classes...

...Jumped the gun a couple days ago a started a Hardcore run - still not excessively difficult yet... I'll probably complete one run in Hardcore and possibly do the remainder of my runs in Insanity until ME3.

First run through ME2 was normal to get a feel for the game. All my subsequent playthroughs have been on insanity.

Insanity all the way. I sometimes swap down to a painfully easy difficulty in Mass Effect because enemies have such a legion of health it becomes a tad monotonous, but even that is a rarity. On anything below Insanity, I hardly notice enemies and since I am not one to rely heavily upon biotic powers. I have little reason not to play on the high end.

Oh god, don't remind me of ME 1 Insanity.

Most tedious insult to the concept of difficulty i have ever had the misfortune to play through.

Remember the charging krogans :o Talk about overkill if you didn't have immunity:?

I hope ME3 has the level of difficulty like starting a ME1 new character on insanity, one that didn't have immunity
Spamming biotics to keep krogans away, and when a battlemaster appeared, all i could do is lift it, use warp and start killing before he hit the ground or else he's spam immunity and krogan regen:blink:

I miss that level of retarded difficulty in ME2, it's more balanced, and we don't have to shoot 40 seconds long pointblank at a lifted krogan, but still, i want a higher difficulty, or atleast stronger krogan.

Not stronger, more of em - fighting twice the number of enemies should spice things up a bit ^_^

I did Normal initially, then tried to make the jump to Insanity. I can't remember how long that lasted, but I found myself switching to Veteran at some point during the playthrough. So I normally play Veteran now.

My first playthrough was on normal, but I slowly moved up to Insanity. Now, I typically play on Hardcore (Insanity if I'm in the mood), but for Vanguards and Adepts I stick to veteran b/c of the lack of shields.

Maybe in addition to the basic difficulty settings, ME3 should tweak its enemy count slightly according to how well / how fast a player is burning through a mission... kind of like L4d's director, only not as extreme. ATM, the better you are at a certain difficulty setting, the fewer guys you have to face, as you blow through the spawn points faster.

I play ME1 on Hardcore, and ME2 on Insanity.

I find ME1 Insanity to be a tedious pain in the backside.

ME on causal because I hate the gameplay with a passion and want to get to the good parts faster.

ME2 it's normal and higher, depends on the class and my mood.

Veteran. Challenging enough without being frustratingly punishing. Hardcore is used only to get Geth pulse fifle.

Indeed.  I did Insanity once for the achievement, but all the cheap deaths and frustratingly high number of reloads made me decide never to do it again.  Admittedly, once you get past the Collector Ship and have a LOT of upgrades, the difficulty levels out some, but most of the early game is simply monstrous.

I did LotSB on Insanity and that was actually fun, mostly because Tela Vasir has to be the most resiliant SOB in the entire game.  She's got more defenses than a Praetorian.

I want to get the ME1 Insanity Achievement, but unless I skip ALL the sidequests and go straight through the story I'd never finish, enemies spamming Immunity and turning into bullet sponges and Krogan full-healing after being dropped to zero got on my nerves on Hardcore.  Never again.

Normal.

I don't play games for achievements or making myself feel good because of the difficulty.

Normal :o It's not as if I'm bad at the game, I just LOVE the story and all the fighting bores me

I have played Insanity and got pissed off at how much longer it took me to complete the game ... Such a noob :wizard:

ME2, 1st play on Normal and then switched to Insanity. Like many others, once switched to Insanity, I never play on other difficulties because ME2 is one of the very few games (for me) that the hardest difficulty happens to be the most exciting and fun difficulty.
