The only time I'll do veteran is if I'm playing an adept because shield busting to use my biotics just doesn't make sense tactically and takes the fun out of the class. Otherwise its insanity all the way because like others have said: once you go insanity you never go back. In fact I'm worried if I did go down a level I'd lose my edge to insanity's gameplay. Still, as a VG on an ME2 import I managed to make it through Mordin's fan section without dying which I suppose is pretty significant given level 30 with zero weapon and armor upgrades.

Anyway, fun fun fun.

Oh god, don't remind me of ME 1 Insanity.

Most tedious insult to the concept of difficulty i have ever had the misfortune to play through.

Remember the charging krogans :o Talk about overkill if you didn't have immunity:?

I hope ME3 has the level of difficulty like starting a ME1 new character on insanity, one that didn't have immunity
Spamming biotics to keep krogans away, and when a battlemaster appeared, all i could do is lift it, use warp and start killing before he hit the ground or else he's spam immunity and krogan regen:blink:

I miss that level of retarded difficulty in ME2, it's more balanced, and we don't have to shoot 40 seconds long pointblank at a lifted krogan, but still, i want a higher difficulty, or atleast stronger krogan.

If one thing can be said about ME. Regardless of the difficulty, Biotics were epic. Flying Krogans everywhere with my VG Singualrity/Life combo. <3

Soft. I always start at the most difficult setting available off the bat and go for the most difficult setting available after that as soon as I can.

Played Veteran on my first play-through, but since then, it's been all insanity, all the time.

This to be honest, and it usually applies to all games.

I play Mass Effects mostly in veteran difficulty, but sometimes hardcore. Why? Because it offeres good challenge without making game feel like ****, because nothing is anymore realistic enough. Increase of challenge while making gameplay totally unrealistic isn't good. Extreme example, you get killed 1 shot, while enemy takes 100 shot. (Unrealistic situation)

Insanity. The other difficulties are too easy. Especially with the DLC weapons.

Casual because I'm not a 'highest difficulty' elitist for RPG's.

If I wanted to get frustrated when I die every couple seconds instead of caring about the immersive story and non-combat gamepley, I'll go play COD or Halo.

Started on casual to familiarize myself with the game (played through ME1 but still) only to realize I found it laughable, so I cranked it up to Hardcore. Even that wasn't that hard so going insanity now.

I'm neither, that doesn't make a higher difficulty a bad thing. Stop trying to make liking a higher difficulty a vice or you are no different from the "highest difficulty elitists".

I typically start off on Normal difficulty, but once I'm used to it, I move up to Veteran. For ME2 especially, it's the optimum setting for challenge AND fun. Having to strip defenses on Hardcore and above just gets tedious, as does getting killed just because you're out of cover for more than a second. (Then again, maybe an Adept wasn't the best choice for a more difficult playthrough.)

I completed Insanity fairly easily on ME1, although that was mainly because I was playing a Soldier and Master Immunity spam makes EVERYTHING a cakewalk. :P

But at the same time, people always go on about how easy Insanity can be and honestly I don't see that.  Or when I ask about Builds but then say I'm not playing on Insanity and people just scoff and ignore my questions about build because "it doesn't matter unless you're on Insanity".  It works both ways :P

ME1: Casual

ME2: Insanity

The reason for this discrepancy is that I actually enjoy the combat in ME2.

That's happened on THIS section of the forums? I could see that happening on the general section but not here. Most people posting in this section are very quick to answer questions, post vids, and help people out when they ask questions about builds or strategies for different sections of the game.

A lot of times people ask what difficulty you are playing on not to use that as a knock against you but because insanity difficulty tends to seriously affect what is or isn't an effective strategy.

I play either casual or veteran the most. I don't really play mass effect much for the fighting (though it can be fun and heart-pounding), I mainly play for the story. For the main collector/reaper missions I play casual. For the side/loyalty missions, I play veteran or even insanity.

ME1 depends on how quickly I want the combat over, but Veteran is most common.

ME2 has been Hardcore, but lately I have found it too easy and am considering a permanent move to insanity instead of just occasional visits.

ME1 I just played on Hardcore.. Insanity wasn't any more difficult combat/tactic wise, just a lot more time consuming.

ME2 My very first character was my imported Vanguard whom I played on Insanity -- Grunt's recruitment mission was really rough, so was the biotic field part of the suicide mission. Other than that, I don't remember ever sitting on a mission dieing over and over. Usually I would die once and realize what happened and fix it.

In Mass Effect 1, I usually play on Veteran. Can't play on Hardcore/Insanity due to Immunity spamming. Kinda sad when I've got an enemy pinned in the corner, blasting him over and over with my shotgun and he won't die. Beat it once on both difficulties and I hated it. Now I stay on Veteran. Not too difficult, but it keeps me on my toes. I can still get OHKOed or 2HKOed if I'm not careful.

On Mass Effect 2, I played for the first time on Veteran. I eventually moved up to Hardcore and now I'm on Insanity. Tough, very tough indeed. But if you play smart, you should be fine.

ME1 - Normal. Because the combat in this game sucks, and I while I replayed it happily a couple of times for the story, I have no interest in making the combat even more annoying.

ME2 - Veteran. I've beaten the game on Insanity, but subsequent replays were for story and/or to get saves for ME3 in order, so I wanted to speed things up a bit. Since I've played through the game eight times now, though, it's just flat-out too easy on Normal, so I set to Veteran.

Mass Effect 1 I play on Veteran because honestly Immunity is tedious. Me 2 I always play on Hardcore. I could play on Insanity, however I feel they are similar enough. Besides I also feel like my shields are worth something on Hardcore. On Insanity they seem to be made of paper.

Side note, I have beaten both on Insanity.

ME1: Hardcore with my Adept because biotics are broken in that game. Veteran at the moment with my Infiltrator, and I'm tempted to bump it down to normal just because I'm so not a fan of ME1's tech and shooting mechanics.

ME2: Insanity. ME2 is honestly the first game where I've replayed it solely for the highest difficulty, and found it very enjoyable to my surprise. It really does change the way combat works, but it doesn't require exploits or grinding for loot/XP or other stupid shenanigans for the player to succeed. Insanity in ME2 requires you to play carefully, use your party members, and think through a few basic strategies before charging in. It's been a blast to play.

Weirdly enough, I choose to step the difficulty down to veteran or hardcore when I'm playing classes I've already beaten the game with. But the first playthrough is on insanity.

Edit:

ME1 was almost always on casual through veteran. I beat the game on insanity, but realized that the game wasn't actually any harder... especially since I favored biotics so much. Nothing was ever killing me, it was just taking longer for me to kill them. Wasn't much fun shooting at the same geth hovering 20 feet over the battlefield for 30 seconds... and having to repeat that for each and every single mob.

I started off with veteran, which imo is the best difficulty because the enemies are challenging, but biotics still work the way they're supposed to. In the middle of my first hardcore runthrough, and I can't say I'm enjoying it very much unfortunately.
