Hello pals, I'm new in this forum and I need some help to solve some probs I have on Mass Effect.

After installing ME and running the CD, on the Menu, you know before running the game it opens the configuration menu. In my case, when it's loading the menu, a window pops up and sais "Mass Effect Configuration Utility has detected an error and has to close", but it never sais what kind of error it is nor solves it after sending info to the Microsoft problem center.

If you need some info, my GPU is a GeForce GT 240, I run on Windows XP 32bit, and my CPU is an AMD 2,7 GHz, 2Gb RAM and enough space on Harddisk

Help would be really appreciated.

Make sure the game is patched to 1.02. The latest patch sometimes fixes these config utility crashes.

If the fix hasn't worked for you, perhaps you are in error about your system.  Let's have its specifications, as per the report description near the top of the index page, where it's pinned in my name (although it's a quoted description).

When I looked that model HP Notebook up, none of the options I saw included the Radeoon Video Graphics Card.

You have left off driver information, audio information, and Graphics Card onboard (dedicated) RAM, that I can be sure of. The particular video card involved is borderline, nothing special, so higher quality settings and higher resolutions are out of its reach.

Have you tried starting either the Configuration Utility or the Game itself from their own executable program files rather than from within the Launcher?

I didn't have Windows 7 or Vista when I ran the game, and although I do have Windows 7 on one PC here, I do not use that machine for gaming, so I haven't had to deal with the Vista / Windows 7 restrictions against gaming. However, I think it's fairly simple, right-click the Icon for the game and modify that, if I recall correctly. Maybe Kloreep uses it, and might stop in later.

YES! it made it! thanks pals for the great help!!!

for others who encounter the same problems:

1. first the game crashed at the config- patch 1.02 worked that out

2.than I pushed the play button and nothing happened- you need to enter the game NOT by the launcher but by entering to the game files and right-button MassEffect(.exe) - than select to operate it as admin and BANG it worked for me- the game stated!

thanks again!!!

I let this part slide while wondering about the Launcher vs. using the Game's own Exe File, but that is close to what I meant.  The reason I put it off is just that what seems OK to one person, is not so good to another.  The way that games run compared to how people PERCEIVE the operation are all over the park.  Your video graphics card is able to run this game at a Medium Resolution, and probably close to Medium Quality settings, but it's getting older as a game now, and doesn't have object interaction tied to card speed.

That same card in ME-2 will probably need to run with Low Resolution, or Interaction won't work.

The important thing is not to accept slowness in favor of either lots of eye candy, or an extra sharp screen, if you keep the FPS from dipping below 20 frames, it should do OK for you. The problem with too many laptops is the default screen setting is slightly "too sharp", and anything less turns really murky. It's the resolution, more than anything, that bogs a slow card down in games.
