Hello,
First time poster since I literally downloaded Steam and ME1+2 last night.
I'm running into this problem when launching ME1 from Steam:
"Mass Effect has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Needless to say, Windows is a $@*!^% tease and never gets around to satisfying my curiosity about why my program stopped working correctly.
I've seen similar threads on the forum (yes, I used the search function), but none of their solutions have helped.
System specs:
Windows Vista (SP2)
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz (running at 3+)
2 GB ram (very soon to be 4)
Radeon HD 5670
No soundcard at the moment, but I'm hoping that isn't the problem (and why would it be?)
This is a self made rig.
The only thing I haven't done is download patch 1.02, but not sure how that works through Steam.
Thanks for the help!
inb4: Steam sucks. If Bioware is using a 3rd party to distribute their software, they own the responsibility to provide a working version to their clients.

Not going to hear that from me. Steam is one of the few places you can get the game and it won't be saddled with SecuROM, so for ME1, I think you bought from the best place.
Anyhow, I'm afraid there's nothing obvious. Since you didn't explicitly say you've updated video drivers, I'll suggest that - though ATI cards have been pretty good with ME, so I would tend to think drivers recent enough for the 5000 series would probably be okay.
I do notice you have quite the overclock going. How thoroughly have you tested system stability with it, and have you tested restoring it to default clocks to cross that off the list of potential problems with ME1?

Hey Kloreep,
Thanks for the help. I was prompted to update my driver soon after my post. That - combined with disabling the User Access Control feature in Vista - and I successfully launched ME1. Some minor sound issues, but nothing that won't be fixed with a new sound card (yay Newegg!).
Re The overclock: I actually inherited that processor from a previous owner. My current rig is built from a couple different boxes. I have a 3.06 GHz Dual core in the mail that I'll be using as soon as it arrives. So far, no stability issues with my current set up. SC2 is running smoothly so far
.
I appreciate the concern, and thanks for the help!
tl:dr: Problem solved by disabling User Access Control in Vista, and updating my ATI driver.
