Ah, I was.. thinking The Sims or something. I couldn't think of a single example of a Western dating sim. So they're basically those creepy hentai games then?

No, some of them are aimed at young girls. The story might involve them being a new student at a school where there are a bunch of cute boys. They'll have to learn what each boy likes and then attract him. It might end up with a kiss and one of them declaring true love.
Others are hardcore porn, horror, or mystery games.

My take on this is roughly the same, but I might phrase it a little differently. RPGs, and particularly Bioware RPGs, are ultimately about story. The gameplay is largely a (very important) vehicle for progressing within the framework of the plot. Inside the context of a story (Especially ones where young attractive characters are thrown together in trying circumstances), it's perfectly plausible (and extremely probably) that romantic attachments and entanglements would develop. Therefore, the inclusion of romances is merely good storytelling, and since player agency is a primary attribute of RPGs it makes sense to have various options. Once options are introduced, it's reasonable to expect the player to desire choices that correspond to their individual preferences.
Now, how they might choose to express those desires, or their disapproval of the presented options, is another matter, as is how effective that expression might be. I will agree with the point that threatening to not buy the game based upon the romance options seems a little extreme, but everyone values and weights the various components of a game differently.

Better about Sir Jory. Oh wait, he's married, so...single. Seriously though, I don't get how you folks can be drawing a line in the sand when you've never even spoken to Aveline. Okay, Isabella might not be to everyone's taste, but we know nothing but good things about Aveline. And given the writers, she may well have an unexpected sense of humor. What is this wrote...

Because clearly the LI's are the do all and end all of the game, and if they don't meet your personal standards of beauty, then your entire experience is ruined.
This is an RPG, not a dating sim.
How would you feel?

And yet you admit that you know nothing about her and so that's based on nothing but groundless assumption. It's a little baffling....filaminstrel wrote...
I know nothing about Aveline, yet that fanart with her having Fenris in a headlock and addressing the others as, "Isabela! Pest!" seems very much like her, for some reason.

I dunno, you can get something of a sense of people by their looks. Hence when people say things like, "I didn't expect his voice to be so high," or "I didn't expect him to be so soft-spoken" or whatever. They got a sense of what the person was like based on looks, which in this case ended up being wrong, but it generally isn't.errant_knight wrote...

And I wasn't lacing that expectation with derision or anything, I just thought it was humorous.

Is it really so much weirder than to say one likes europeans/asians/blacks/blondes/redheads and considers them to be more interesting and "tromancable" than others?
Not really, but if a friend of mine said that he thought a girl he doesn't know must be boring because "she's not Asian" I would still call him a freak.
Someone obviously doesn't know the power of yellow fever.

Or maybe that's just me? Personally I had no problems with Leliana and Morrigan both being human I was just glad they held different views to add to the experience.

To be honest, I don't know. I'd have to play the game and check out their personalities before picking a romance, not to mention that romances for me are determined by the characters I make.
I can only guess that my first Hawke, being more of a goody-two-shoes (or Boy Scout, as Wolverine likes to call good guys), I'll probably have him with Isabela, because I'm a fan of the good-guy/bad-girl dynamic
The rest, hell, I have no idea. Haven't thought that far.
^This
This as well!
Personality is the most decisive factor, but my male Hawke will probably go more for Isabela, because at the moment, she looks more fun.
I'm renting the game first as well, to see if I like it enough to buy, so I may not even get that far when I initially play, certainly not far enough to finish one playthrough and start another one

This is an RPG, not a dating sim.
There is a linear dependency between hotness and/or cuteness of LI (or female party member) and success of the game.

Have you got some evidence for that?
