OK, I've finished ME2 twice as a soldier and once as an infiltrator. Now I want to try Adept or Sentinel (suggestions?)

The biggest problem I have is aiming powers at non standard targets. These include the Reaper Larva at the end and the Reaper Power Core when you get Legion.
My problem is that I try to use a power such as Incinerate and it doesn't lock onto the weak areas, and thus does no damage. I know I'm doing something wrong, so some help would be most appreciated! :)

When you play the class with incinerate etc instead of it being a squadie it will fire like a projectile and it a bit easier to hit the reaper larva etc. Not easy mind you but easier. I like adept and getting the targeting down is a big thing since you can arc your powers to hit people behind cover, though if they are out of cover and move into it while it is in flight it misses a lot for me. Also each power has a different flight speed which you have to get used to.

Because the Reaper moves so quickly my powers are always missing the vulnerable spots. I imagine that it'll be the same if I use either Adept or Sentinel since they use powers even more.

Adept for fun mode.  Sentinel for serious business.

I'm playing an Adept on Veteran now, toying with Singularity.  Hilarity ensues.  Example - in Mordin's recruitment mission with the fans, I tossed a Singularity at some Vorcha Heavies up on the catwalk.  Often, the fan blows them across the entire stage (killing them).  But last night, one Vorcha had the bad luck of being blown into one of the pillars.  He just kind of slammed into it, his arms wrapped around it Wile E. Coyote style, and just kept screaming.

But when I'm on Insanity and want to play through with zero deaths (I still haven't succeeded quite yet), I choose Sentinel.  To be honest, with the Sentinel the key is his Assault Armour power, the others are really just like fun bonuses.  In the situation you described on how powers don't lock to objects like the Reaper Core, the way I took care of it as a Sentinel is to rely on my Assault Armour to defend against the husks while I just shoot at it with my Viper Sniper Rifle.

With bosses like the Reaper core and the Human-Reaper powers alone aren't gonna cut it, it's sadly a case of whittling it down with guns for what can feel like an eternity. The Viper is good in these situations however the amount of defense they have does mean it gets tedious so I wouldn't worry too much about casting powers on these kindof enemies as generally their damage alone is negligible.

Eh the only power an adept will use in this case is warp and it track enough that I almost always hit the reaper weak spot. It does crap damage mind you and odds are I'd get better DPS from my hand cannon but it hits.

OK, thanks guys. Is the same true with the Thresher Maw?

Also, is there any way to make 'tracking' heavy weapons like the missile launcher actually hit the reaper, rather then homing in on one of the other enemies?

Your best bet for that fight is to just go with the Cain or if you need to, the Collector Beam.  The launcher is just too much of a headache.

In regards to Warp on the Reaper, don't bother.  You really are better off focusing on using your Carnifex/ Predator/ Locust/ Mattock/ Viper/ (armor destroying weapon of choice) to whittle it down.  Reave and squad anti-armor powers work well, but Incinerate and Warp are tough as you've noticed.

Yeah, get ready for a long fight against the Reaper Larva. I hate that fight as anything other than a Soldier or Infiltrator. It's not that it's difficult. It just takes time and doesn't let most classes use their abilities to the fullest.

I'd recommend Thane + Miranda for Warp spam on recharge. That helps take it down faster. Oh, and the Cain.

As Kronner has pointed out a few times, the shotgun will do damage to the thresher maw and also the final boss ( he uses claymore in his video, I have used evi ). For gods sake use the cain on the Reaper IFF core - that fight is a pain in the $$$.

He posted this in the "Vanguard on Grunt Loyality Mission Thread" a while ago.

Kronner wrote...

I usually do it after the Collector mission, but I take the Claymore, so no long range difference here.

That said, I take it down with the Claymore (+Inferno ammo), it does not take more than 2 minutes (NG+ Insanity, 3 shotgun upgrades, N7 gear+recon hood). I usually use Cain too, just to speed it up a bit. I can post video later.

edit:

Video is here.

Please note this is ng+ and Shep is level 30, so Maw has maximum armor possible and therefore takes the longest to take down. Killing the Maw with Claymore is a lot more fun than sniping for me.

If you go the paragon route on the Zaeed loyalty mission you get heavy weapon ammo, that+the 10%ammo pouch leg mod gets you 200% ammo or 2 shots.(assuming you got all other heavy weapon ammo mods) That knocks the reaper larva down to half health, and is totally worth it. A single cain shot takes out the reaper core again worth it.
