In the mage tower there's a common room with 3 statues, one with a bowl, one with a sword pointed down, and one with a sword pointed up.

It's related to the quest about an ancient ritual that was never completed... and mentions something about entering the fade.

How do I complete this quest?  It says the first step is to "put it into the bowl" or something to that effect... but whenever I interact w/ the statue w/ the bowl, it shocks me.  In fact, all the statues shock me.  Also, there doesn't seem to be anything else in the room to interact w/...

Maybe I'm meant to go into the basement?

Nope.



One of the statues doesn't shock you when you touch it at first. Then the next correct one doesn't shock you, then the third one doesn't shock you. As well as damaging you, the shocks indicate that the puzzle just got reset. Touch them out of order, and you'll get shocked.



The fourth statue is in a different room entirely.

Ah, you're right about the shocking. There's no positive feedback on a correct touching, so whenever it didn't shock me, I thought I didn't get close enough to touch it and proceeded to touch it again.



Bah.
