 Hey guys, just wondering if I HAVE to romance someone in ME1. Like, I want to be able to get close enough to them to talk about personal stuff, but I don't want any of them.

Yeah. Just be sure to let them know that you don't want to be romantically involved with them.

Or you counld do what one of my ManSheps did. Talk to Ashley a lot to start up a relationship but leave her on Virmire. Don't recruit Liara until the Second to last or last story mission.

You can use a strongly negative answer to one of their questions. As far as I can tell there isn't a 'turn them down politely' option for Kaidan or Ashley.

Actually for all of them there is a polite way to stop the romance. Ashley is on the conversation(1st-2nd) when she starts about the aliens on the ship, choose the left option, telling her she is out of line. When you do that, it stops the romance completely and kicks it into almost the same conversations for a fem shep. So you can politely stop her romance. I know someone on here posted a nice list of all romances and how to stop them, maybe google search would help.

I don't know. Telling Ash that she is out of line for raising a legitimate security concern doesn't seem like a nice option to me.

It's hard, I know. But if you pull through, you can get Tali in ME2 without repercusions in ME3

Nah, I just left Ash on Virmire to do that.

Edit: Yes, I realised that isn't exactly nice either.
