Alright so I was trying out how long it takes until I can get the jealousy scene in Mass Effect.  Basically I started a relationship with Kaidan after Eden Prime and the Citadel.  My first story mission I did after that was that I recruited Liara and showed an attraction to her and started a relationship with her while keeping my relationship with Kaidan.  So pretty much after that I did a lot of side missions:
Garrus: Find Dr. Saleon
Wrex: Family Armor
The Cerberus Mission (Missing Marines thru Hades' Dogs)

I know I did a lot more than that before doing the Feros Mission.  I think it was after the Family Armor quest that I went back into the Normandy and started to talk to everybody again: Kaidan asked me about Liara and vice versa.  Right after Feros (second story mission after Liara's) Kaidan and Liara's jealousy scene started.  It was to my knowledge that only story missions advanced romances and I takes about two of them to advance them far enough.  I was wondering if I am wrong or if anybody else has expirenced something similar?

I think that side missions do help along the romance sub-plot. After clearing out all of the geth baes in the Armstrong cluster last night I was able to get Garrus' side mission and Wrex's, and talk more with Ashley.
