I heard that publishers have to pay to have their games on steam, might be something with that, no clue really.

Imo, i think its just EA that hope to get people to use their "so called" game download manager.

While I would like to agree with this, the fact that it's also available on other digital download services kind of neglects this point.

But I have heard rumors that many publishers aren't too happy with Steam's dominance of the digital distribution market.

That kind of sucks. I wanted to buy it on Steam. I wonder if it has anything to do with the "rights" to the game expiring and having to be renewed on the other digital platforms have anything to do with it? I know that with the EA manager that the games "expire" after a year, and I think they do at the others? Not sure about Steam though.

Wow, that sucks. Why is that even the case? EA has close ties with Valve. They are even publishing Portal 2.

I really cant find a good reason for that.

Is Steam really that uber? Like, I have a couple games on it and I think its pretty neat, but I think people are going overboard with their responses. With a game like this, i'd much prefer a physical copy.

What? Games expires on the EA store?

On all digital platforms once you buy a game, it's yours for good, no need to pay again ever. Of course, this doesn't take into account the possibility of a service going out of business, which is why I strongly preferred Steam, as they are the most reliable digital platform.

Yes i belive that games expire on the EA store after a year. BUT if you feel like it you can buy a expended lease of you game for 3 years. Wich is one of the reason i will NEVER use the EA store.

Well, I do think Steam is that uber but that's not the point. I like to have all my games organized in one place and as far as digital services go, Steam is the most reliable one as well.

As for a physical copy, I'd agree if the physical copy actually had something worthy about it. The Origins package was nice but nothing in comparison to the older games where you had huge manuals, art-books, posters, and other stuff.

These days, most physical copies are pretty lackluster.

That is... as messed up as messed up can be!! And to think I almost bought a few games from the EA store... :o

I read in the support FAQ or what have you that the ability to re download the game expires after a year.

And about physical copies. I would love one.. however I'm not paying $69.99 CAD for a physical copy. That's just too much to me.

Direct 2 Drive and Impulse don't have expiration dates after a purchase. Don't know about the other services.

From what I understood I thought D2D had one, but if you bought the extended plan it didn't? Oh well.. I know I'm not buying from a bunch of different digital sources to have all their platforms clogging up my computer.

Direct2Drive aren't far behind, last I checked they're in the #2 position. The thing with Steam is it's more than just a store - It's a community tool, it's a library for your games and other things. They make it worth using.

EA clearly don't have any problems with Valve due to the recent deal, but this doesn't make a blind bit of sense. They've entered their games into the Steam sale, they sell through it like many other publishers and so forth. There's no logic to how this is...

Wait. Wait. Maybe it's gonna be bolstered to some degree and sold as a Digital Deluxe edition? They did it with DA:O (Came with Warden's Keep in the EU but with no CE items, which I found a bit of a d*ck move by EA. I paid more than the US but got less? What?) and ME2, so maybe Steam is getting a Digital Deluxe edition instead.

Only Steam, EA (EA titles only) and Impulse have "platforms" out of the big companies. GamersGate, Direct2Drive and Gog don't, but Gog does have (Or did, at least) a downloader that's optional.

Hmm... all my games (physical copies) are nicely organized on the shelf above my bed Posted Image. I guess I can kind of understand your view with owning a physical copy. I buy them because I like having it in my hands, not really for the bonuses that come with it. Posted Image

Good news.
This means I'll have more money to spend for a different game. Thanks!

Just be happy with the standard edition or are you honestly going to buy this for the freebies/extras > game? It's not like your getting screwed over this offer is LIMITED to certain companies to a certain date. There will be many places that won't do this offer.

Anyways I own DA:O on disk and was planning to get this on disk regardless so I
am not affected. For steam users i'm sure the signature edition will be
available at the extended price if you want it so don't panic yet :)

Um...no, it won't.

Chris Priestly wrote...

No the Signature Edition offer will not be available through Steam. The only digital source for the Signature Edition is the EA Store and already listed retailers.

That is about a clear a statement of "No" as I've ever seen on the forums. And it does suck for anyone who wanted the game on Steam. If I was getting it, it would have been through Steam, just as I did for ME/ME2, DA:O and DA:Awakening. No access on Steam means 99.9% certainty that I won't be getting it at release, if ever. After seeing how "well" the EAloader/EAstore/EAsupport worked for ME et. al., I won't ever consider even thinking about the possibility of using it. I don't use D2D because of the patching/won't work with version x issues.

You can be as sarcastic as you want to my response, I was trying to be helpful but if thats really the case im just gonna tell u to get the standard edition and stop whining over a few weapons and a quest that will become £3 DLC a few months later anyway.

No Steam, no buy :(

Not utilizing the premier digital download service is a real slap in the face to some customers.

I'm overjoyed that EA doesn't use Steam. As long as Steam makes patching mandatory, I will not use them.

What are the re-download restrictions for the other services? At one point, you could only download your game for a certain amount of time on EA's service. If your hd blew and you needed to re-download it after that time period, you had to pay a fee, if not rebuy the game. There were people who bought their copy of MEpc or DA:O from Steam for that reason. Since I have no intention of ever using EA's service, I haven't kept up with the requirements or restrictions so I don't know whether this still applies or not. I don't use the D2D at all, so I'm not familiar with the requirements on that one either.

I've never noticed this restriction on Steam. Once I bought the game, I can download it, re-download it, and download it again in a year or more if needed.

I'm not sure about mandatory. I have my games set to not autopatch and they haven't so far. I'm two patches behind for FO:NV, I think.

Your comment makes no sense. Just because the option would be there wouldn't mean you would have to use it.

I buy physical copies of games whenever possible.  But publishers who use Steam more and more tend to use Steam as their DRM, and that requires than that we're tied to Steam's activation, and Steam's activation includes mandatory patching.

Sure, you can disable autopatching after the game is activated, but not before, and activation includes patching.

I installed Empire:Total War long after it was released, and was immediately faced with a 1.5 GB download that wasn't optional.  And this annoyed me all the more because the later patches only tweaked combat to make it more challenging.  Maybe I want that, but maybe I don't, and if I got to choose I would try to play the game without the patch first to see if I wanted it.

And what if you uninstall a game and reinstall it later?  Do you have to activate it again?  Will that require mandatory patching?

Steam places too much control (I think) of the game experience in the hands of the publisher.  They get to decide how the game behaves.  They get to decide what you can do with the game.  No.  I will not accept that.

I believe you can change the settings, or you could just stay in offline mode. Since I discovered you can play from offline mode and get around Steam's annoying little popups and constant updating, I've gone back to using Steam more often.

And you can't rollback to a previous version, so if, say, an "update" is released which contains more bugs than it claims to fix and makes your copy of the game unplayable, then you are SOL.  Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything, grumble grumble.

I love Steam because it means I can buy a game when I'm visiting my parent's for the holidays with only my laptop and then go home and install it on my desktop with no hassle, but I wouldn't like a digital-only version of any game I really got invested in, no matter how reliable the service.

Right, so you can't ever test a patch without accepting it for all time.

So self-respecting IT guy would ever accept such a restriction from software in the office he manages.  Why am I expected to accept it recreationally?

Wasn't being sarcastic. I thought you didn't see Chris's reply.

You are assuming I'm going to get the game. I haven't seen anything so far that makes me want to get it at all; Mass Jade Dragon Age Effect 2: Rise of the AWESOME BUTTON isn't my style of game. Something about kicking breakable flask grenades and firestorming your own party but only hurting/killing the bad guys just doesn't sit right with me. And the only "whining" about weapons I've done is "whining" that my sword and dagger rogue can't use a sword, and my twin axes rogue can't use axes, and my warrior that uses a bow in situations that are appropriate for it can't use a bow. I had no idea there were any weapons included with whatever is included with the signature edition. Once I found out about the changes of what I liked about Origins, like the no-longer-silent pc and the weapon restrictions, I haven't paid much attention to things. I'm only hanging around to find out who the va is for femHawke. Call it morbid curiosity; I disliked maleShep's voice to the point he never made it off the ship to Eden Prime in ME. They've released a clip with maleHawke's voice, and I might have been able to tolerate it. Now I'm curious about femHawke. The game might be an eventual on sale buy from Steam some day in the future, maybe.

No offense people, but my OP was if this was getting released on Steam or not. It was not intended to invite a discussion about why some people think it sucks.

Mods, you can close this thread now, thanks.
