Most specifically, I was talking about the post Gaider made where he expressed his hope that people would be able to appreciate the game and the effort Bioware put into it even if it didn't have same sex romances in it. That was what specifically made me a little surprised when it was confirmed that there would be S/S romances.

I think that's a legitimate position. Bioware games are not romance games. They're action adventures with romances in them.

If the reason one enjoys Bioware's games is primarily due to their being romance options, I read David Gaider's comments as something of a subtle warning; that those expectations are not necessarily always going to be met because it's not really what - in the end - they're all about.

There was never any doubt in my mind that s/s romance would be included so my reaction is basically: "Oh. 'Kay."

Ah. I can see where people would be alarmed.

Well, I was worried but I still had faith. Gaider always seemed to be a huge proponent of same sex, even in interviews.

For now, let's party.

The presence of Isabela was my confirmation. It's moved me to a state of relative contentment I assume straight men usually occupy. I thought Mary's mockery of me when I suggested there was no M/M romance was a strong hint. I am glad that those interested in M/M romances will get their day.

Off topic: What I find funny about the way that Orson Welles gif is used on the internet is he's actually clapping a terrible performance because it was his wife, in an auditorium he built for her, despite the fact she isn't any good and didn't really want to perform. His applause is defiant.

Granted, the context of the gif I used doesn't really apply to the situation either.

This is the only internet site where I see that gif being used in a completely sincere manner.

Fark.com does.   But yeah, that was a general minirant on my part.  And because Citizen Kane is an amazing film.

I was a little surprised...given ME2. And Gaider's comments some time ago regarding S/S romances in DA2. But I should have known that he just likes tormenting us.

I think that's a bit unfair to David. He doesn't enjoy tormenting us. He wants us to have a realistic view of the situation.

I'm not sure what ME 2 has to do with anything. ME 1 didn't have same-sex romances for men. Heck, according to its creators, it didn't have them for women.

Heh, David himself says that he likes to see fan tears. Is he joking? Maybe. Was I joking? Maybe.

Back to topic, I think its great if its designed to be more inclusive and friendly to all walks of life and orientations, as long as we are given mature situations and dialog, not only comic relief ALL THE TIME (Zevran anibody?) Image IPB

Tying that up to achievements is ludicrous I think, as was stated above many times. The whole point is to enrich your role-playing experience, not to enlarge your list of achievements thats  but a "bragging sistem" and nothing more.

Again, overall, in  DAO the relationships and sex I think were handled good, but the sex in some parts (i. e. in the brothel) was just a stupid mini-game. You could tell where the writers made an effort and where they just went to sleep...

So please writers, keep the quality benchmark high... Image IPB

I always that that s/s meant sword and shield. I just want to be the sword in any romance.

I think the achievements are there to encourage you to explore the game, so it makes sense that they prod you to explore the writing that went into each LI, 'cause each one is crafted differently. *shrugs* But I wouldn't really mind if said achievements disappeared, doesn't really matter to me one way or the other.

On the subject of s/s, put me down as proud and excited. :)

As in DAO you could only get certain achievements by having S/S relationships.

No. Try again.

Ulous wrote...

Yes but it is all part of a bigger issue for me, I don't really wan't to play as a female char either...

That's a bit better. Now understand that 'Achievements shouldn't be tied to romances because I don't want a same-sex romance, don't want to play a woman, and think that I must get every possible achievement' is a hard to defend position. It's perfectly fine to feel that way, but you have to be clear you're simply expressing a rather picky preference and that you realize game design doesn't, and shouldn't, cater to your every whim.

I'd suggest: 'I think achievements shouldn't be tied to romances, or if they're tied to romances, they shouldn't be unlocked during sex. Having a pop-up when you bag a companion is tacky and undermines the moment.'

It might not be what you think but it's far more persuasive.

I dont care at all, I mean its nice for you who wanted it, but I didn't play DA:O as a dating sim, that part of the game is just a tiny sideshow in an otherwise epic RPG. I dont care why people care so much about the romance thing, when it's really not THAT big part of the entire game.

^Is there a point to your spam?

Anyways, I'm happy to see potential S/S romances confirmed even though it really means bisexual characters.

And if Isabela has anything to do it, that love will spread to every single party member LI or not in one night.

Very happy. I don't play for the romances but there are very few games that even acknowledge the existance of homosexuals.. so while it seems like a small thing it really means a lot to some of us.

This is great news. I really liked the way the romances were handled in DAO, where homosexual relationships were portrayed as just as healthy and loving and the sex just as important as their straight counterparts.  I also liked that the romances, no matter what gender, felt real. <3 DAO romances.

I'll tell you, during my male playthrough to get the Morrigan and Leliana achievements, when trying to romance them got me completely confused, it was nice to be able to dump them both to romance Zevran. I had to ask my husband if women are really THAT confusing -- he just laughed at me for awhile.

I am happy about this news.

No, DA isn't a 'dating sim' (please excuse me while I roll my eyes at the people who keep bringing that term up as a way to argue against the inclusion of s/s options), but the inclusion of diverse het romance options in a game necessarily makes the exclusion of s/s options appear circumspect (ME is a case in point).

So yay, Dragon Age team. And I long for the day when these things don't have to be debated, at length, with arguments, and just exist without comment.

I liked being rewarded for taking the paladin's virginity. Lord knows it took a lot of work. At least someone else appreciated it.

Ahahahaha, when I got the easy lover achievement, my character was flirting with him and cheating on Alistair. I felt all, "GAH!" and wanted to take it back! I love the achievements, though it would be nice to have additional achievements for getting their declarations of love (so many people missed Zevran's because they just didn't know it was there and it IS easy to miss).
