I don't really get how people can be bothered about the prescence of S/S romance...its the 21st century, get over your prejudices. If, like me, you don't particularly want to engage in S/S romance in a video game, then...and this may be beyond some people's intellects so I apologise in advance...don't, and allow the people who do want to do that kind of thing to do so. Simples?
I don't think it is about prejudice, some people like to roleplay in their minds what kind of character they want to be, if like I said earlier an achievement is linked to being the opposite sex to what you want to be and/or a S/S encounter it can be difficult to avoid. The obvious counter debate to this is that some people may not want to roleplay being bad, the difference however is that there is incentive to be bad, as you get numerous chances to do this and it has an overall effect on the gaming experience, where as being a homosexual has little to no incentive, other than a stereotypical all gay men are easy dry hump by a camp fire (for the M/M romance).
You don't have to play a homosexual character. I played a male character to romance both Morrigan and Leliana and get the achievements. You can very easily get the achievements for Alistair and Zevran in a female playthrough -- and you can get Zevran's before Alistair's.
I did say or being forced to be the opposite sex as well.
Well, you're not being forced to do anything. If you want the achievements, yes, occasionally you have to play a character that is different from how you perceive yourself. Your argument is one against having any love interests (or at least achievements for) that you personally are not interested in.
A lot of people don't like the romance achievements -- that's a different issue. but saying there shouldn't be achievements for people who prefer love interests other than the ones you prefer because you like the rp is... not that great an argument. Since it would take at least three playthroughs to get all achievements provided you didn't reload to get various achievements, if you only play through once, you're most likely not going to get all the achievements anyway.
Edit; Everyone has their preferences. If it bothers you that much to play a character that is different from you, then don't. is missing an achievement really that big an issue?
