Granted, they represent a small majority of the overall people I've known but the claim women are less violent is something I find unlikely.
Open aggressiveness is a male trait; I find men tend to be more aggressive in attitude but generally more bluster than action.
Empirically, women are as openly aggresive as men. They are just relationally aggresive, i.e. they will gossip, they will turn your friends against you, they will smear your reputation, etc. Whereas men are more prone to direct aggresion. And this seems to be a cultural thing, because in longitudinal studies it doesn't crop up with very young children, who haven't internalized cultural norms.
But empirically speaking men are far more prone to violence than women, and far more likely to directly aggress. And that's also the stereotype.
Again - I am not saying women do these things. But this is a stereotype, and if we are talking about impressions of someone we know absolutely nothing about beyond the fact she has muscular arms and is an S&S warrior, that's what people are reduced to.
