For anything other than Hardcore/Insanity, I either play as the Adept or the Sentinel. My personal favorite in ME1 was the Adept, but that's changed now that the range of powers is... smaller. Sentinel is basically kick *** since it's "prepared for any situation".
Vanguard was my first choice for a character and so far my least liked. I never felt that I was able to do much with him on the first run in ME2. I'd probably be satisfied if I was to go back through with another one, but for now I'll stick with my Soldier.

Tech Armor is game-breaking and Charge is boring. Adrenaline Rush and Tactical Cloak are both really versatile and strategic powers. Coming up with new uses for them is fun.
Well game breaking does seem to be a matter of opinion, but there are fun uses for Hardended and Heightened AR and Heavy Charge that can be awe inspiring, but there are also cool combos that can be still made fun through playing ME and pull charging enemies in ME2.
I personally like Heigthened AR, Pull, Heavy Charge and a Power Armor investment, in that order. : )

Insanity was tedious with all of them, but here are my rankings.
Vanguard.
Adept.
Soldier.
Infiltrator.
Engineer.
In ME 2, i have finished all classes on Insanity but Sentinal (only a few hours away though)
This is my ranking.
1. Vanguard (Reave, Mattock/Evisc).
The Destroyer.
Loved this class like mad. Charges barrier boost forcing me to play more aggressively the more damage i took, that heavy impact from Charge..... The only problem with the class is Shockwave unlocking Pull. Switch that around and you have pure perfection
Sentinel (Energy Drain, Mattock).
The Golden God.
Did you shoot me, or was that a gust of wind? I honestly cant tell the difference. This class is the ultimate all rounder, and unbelievably tough. I am at the tail end of my Sentinel playthrough (with only Reaper IFF, Legion loyalty, Suicide Mission and LotSB left) and have checked to make sure i am on Insanity so many times i have lost count. Only hours ago, without any cover, I stood toe to toe with two Blue Suns turians with shotguns (only standard troops) and simply sat there spamming energy drain and tech armour untill they were both dead (not a single shot from squadmates). Unbelievable. Having a power for each defense gave me welcome freedom in choosing squad members.
3. Infiltrator (Neural Shock, Widow).
The void reaches from the shadows.
Normally i hate snipers, going with a battle rifle/shotgun combination, but i really loved the Infiltrator. The cloak cqb capabilities, the widow, simply fantastic. The only thing keeping the Infiltrator out of the number two spot is not a problem with the class, but with the games auto aim which is by far the most annoying and intrusive of any i have ever encountered. It is at it's ultimate worst when sniping, and really brings the Infitrator down. It is a damn shame such an awesome class is brought low by such a mechanic.
4. Adept (Warp Ammo, Mattock).
Violet vortex of vengeance.
I am constantly perplexed by the complaints of this class sucking on Insanity. I thought i was missing something but, after finishing a NG+ Insanity run, have concluded people are simply disappointed that the class has limits now. An absolute powerhouse, capable of destroying enemies with a thought. Struggle against my Singularity, struggle ****! Mwahahahaha! Writhe for me!
5. Engineer (Flashbang or AP ammo, Geth Plasma Shotgun).
Distract, deconstruct, destroy.
I was never expecting to love this class so much. With a drone ever present, the gps in my hands and my trusty omni-tool, nothing ever seems to touch me. Such a discriminated against class.........i suppose Tali and Legion having Drones does somewhat take away from the classes specialfullness, but the cooldown difference is substantial, and makes Engineer a perfectly viable class.
6. Soldier (Flashbang, Revenant)
I was expecting to enjoy this class so much more. Adreneline Rush is so powerful, nothing else is worth using. So the variation in this class comes solely from what you shoot, which just doesn't cut it for me. The Revenant is certainly fun, in a "BWHAHAHAHAHAHA! DIE ****ES!!!" way and, with Inferno Ammo, makes a better flamethrower then the actual flamethrower. But with all the other classes having such fun and interesting powers, this class fell flat for me. It is certainly powerful though, but every class can shoot.....if not as well.
All of the classes in ME 2 are a great deal of fun, and i can listen to anyone rant about their favourite and totally get what they mean. I suspect the Soldiers tremendous popularity is due to people who pick the game up knowing they will only ever play through it once, and it is the simplest and easiest to get into class (thus it being the default).

The Infiltrator's one-shot-one-kill with the Widow is fun to pull off too. My Sentinel experience was largely forgettable, and while the Vanguard's Charge ability is cool, it doesn't really mesh well with my usual playstyle, so I hardly ever used it.

Did adept once, also tried Vanguard, but perhaps i should of given it a bigger chance than i did.
Half way through an insanity level Widow Soldier with a geth pulse rifle and im LOVING it, adrenaline one shot kills with a future version of the Barrat Sniper Rifle is fantastic fun!

playing a class without biotics doesnt make sense to me. when someone asks you what does mass effect offer, the first thing thats mentioned are "force powers" on almost every occasion. i ****ing love biotics. throwing somone just never gets old. i played ME1 around 40 times and never once even tried a non biotic class
I'm in a similar situation - I really like the concept of biotics and, particularly in ME1, I found the tech and combat classes to be rather boring in comparison.
. with global cooldowns in ME2 its easier to play an infiltrator with slam or stasis as a bonus power and just act as if your a vanguard. i used to love the vangaurd in ME1, once i found out how powerfull its potential was. a true biotic warrior! i dont have much of a favorite class for ME2. other then spamming the class specific abilities, all the classes sortof just play the same.
I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say all classes play the same.

- Headshotting things in slow motion never gets old
- Endless supply of incinerate bombs
- Disruptor ammo lets me dispense with Zaeed on geth missions (don't get me wrong, he's still pretty good, but I like the option of taking someone else)
- SMGs with big ammo clips for hosing down guys
- Tactical cloak tends to improve one's survival chances
- Being at the back of the group (for aforementioned headshotting) also tends to improve one's survival chances

Having now played every class in ME2, I'd say the infiltrator is my favourite, for the following reasons:
Infiltrators are ridiculously versatile - to be honest I think they're a bit cheesy. No other class in the game can simply change their entire playstyle on the fly however often they want. Short range, long range, stealth, brute force, nuker, CC - it's just gets a bit silly.
Doesn't stop them from being an entertaining class to play.

I loved the Soldier. Any gun for any situation, and can take an absolute beating compared to the other classes in ME1. I got sniped a lot, so not being OHKOed or 2HKOed saved my sanity. Any gun for any situation carried over into ME2 as well, which really saves my hide from time to time. I have a few Revenant Soldiers and I may give the Widow Soldier a shot next time since I prefer to fight from a distance.
The Vanguard drove me nuts initially. I couldn't do anything at first because I always got mowed down when I tried to advance. Spent most of the game relying on submachine guns. My second time though when I bumped up to Hardcore, I understood the mechanics better and my play as a Vanguard improved. I still die a LOT, but I learn quickly and can't wait to try it on Insanity.
Sentinels got a huge boost from ME1 to ME2. Now they're versatile, and nearly unbeatable thanks to Tech Armor. I want to give Shotgun Sentinel a try next time since I also have a Sentinel I'm playing as.
Engineers drove me nuts in ME1 since I challenged myself to play it on Hardcore from LV1. Constant OHKOs by snipers. As I leveled up my results improved, but it was a rough road. ME2 was fine. Since everyone and their mother shot at me, using the Combat Drones as distractions really came through. The mighty Harbinger, distracted by a piece of techno-crap. Spamming Incinerate was fun too.
Adept is the one class I haven't really used yet (it's next after my Soldier, Infiltrator, Sentinel playthroughs are done). I used it once in an ME2 standalone playthrough. But I intend to make a proper run with it on Insanity in ME2 by playing ME1 first (I play at Veteran in ME1 to preserve my sanity).
