So, Mass Effect looks like crap on my PC.

On max settings, I have screen tearing, low res textures, framerate issues, and a sound issue where I am hearing a "popping" sound randomly and very often as I am roaming around the Citadel. It looks bad compared to the 360 version. Now, I can play Mass Effect 2 on max settings and it looks absolutely beautiful, no framerate issues, textures are perfect, sound is perfect, everything is perfect. So, it doesn't make any sense that the first game would be having these issues when I would imagine it is a lot easier to run system wise.

My question is, is the game just not as graphically appealing on PC as it is on the 360, or is there some issue going on with my game? I downloaded it from Steam, if that matters. I'm also running it on the newest 1.2 patch.

So, if there's a reason why it is running so poorly, can you please give sime tips on how to improve it, or if the game just runs like this generally on the PC, then let me know so that I don't get so frustrated with it.

PC specs:

Video card - Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT
RAM - 3GB DDR3
Processor - Intel Core i3 530 @ 2.93ghz (4 CPUs)

I'm not very good at computers, so I'm just typing what the specs say.

Thanks guys.

Newer video drivers normally cause something like this. Roll back to an older revision and it should clear itself up.

Actually, in some regards, ME-2 benefits from additional experience with the UT3 engine, and is better optimized, although their choice of graphics card feedback for environmental interaction makes the bottom end card situation very different.

ME-2 was written in tandem, alongside of its console versions, to work well with PCs.  Bioware didn't anticipate wanting a PC conversion of ME-1, and when EA decided they wanted one, it was given to another company (Demiurge), and the console origins show throughout.  ME-1 always was more problematic on PCs.

Personally, I can't comment on what any console does, how it looks, etc.  I've never had one; never wanted one.  When ME-1 was a new PC port, I ran it on a new PC, with a Radeon HD 3870 video card, and the image quality was just fine.  You've probably upgraded your Geforce drivers past a better stopping point.  Since the 8n00 cards were new, nVIDIA seems to have lost their old magic touch with drivers, and very often end up breaking the performance on their older hardware, while working to help their newest cards.

P. S.  I have edited the name of Demiurge above.  I mixed them at first with an expansion that was added to NWN2, sorry

I have this problem too; also downloaded it from steam last night (great deals!). If you find a solution, will you post it here? :)

Post your specs and we'll see if it is the same deal as the last person. If you are using an older Nvidia card it's probably the latest driver (it hates older cards i had a significant performence drop myself) and you should roll back to the last one which works fine.

Well if you would take a look at the forum for Mass Effect technical problems you would see how many problems this title has.  I certainly wish I had been smart enough to read them before I purchased this game as it was just a waste of money.  LOL Bioware's solution for my problem was "contact EA support"  EA’s solution was "ensure my system meets the system requirements (well if it DIDN'T then I surely wold NOT have purchased the game). Wow, that is a lot of help

as for me, I seriously doubt that I will ever waste my money on a Bioware title again.

If you don't wish to puchase EA games then don't. Don't waste your time coming on a forum to tell everyone.
