...Um, I know this probably sounds a bit juvenile but I gotta be honest here, whenever somebody calls Mass Effect a Star Wars rip-off it really makes my blood boil. I think Mass Effect is much more than simply a Star Wars rip-off. I mean sure it was influenced by it (like many other Sci-Fi projects are,) but that's like saying The Spectacular Spider-Man: Animated Series (2008) was a rip-off of Spider-Man (1994) because it had a repackaged Spider-Man vs. The Lizard episode as it's pilot.
And I know Shepard dying in Mass Effect 2 and then being brought back to life, is sort of like the moment where Han is frozen in carbonite and then thawed out but...it's not enough to call Mass Effect a rip-off.

Mass Effect's story is told much like Star Wars was told. I never got the impression on the forum that it was a rip-off. But I do get the sense that everyone on this forum thinks ME was this perfect story and ME2 is a horrible travesty when the trilogy is mirroring the same style Star Wars told it's own story.
Well it is, sort of, it pays homage to all those classic space operas: Star Wars, Star Trek (green alien nookie/blue alien nookie), Battlestar Galactica (Humans/Quarians, Cylons/Geth), Babylon 5 (the citadel, and does anyone else think the Drell look like the Narn). Any space opera based game is going to get compared to Star Wars and beyond superificial differences (biotics/force, spectres/jedi, guns/blasters, war movie references/Kurasawa references) the universes aren't that different. It's no more realistic or better written than any of them, it just happens to be a game instead of a movie or TV franchise. Though you would probably be closer to the mark calling ME2 a Dirty Dozen rip off in terms of plot. As long as you enjoy the game, who cares what other people say.
You know now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't be so angry over this...I mean, jaded and deluded Star Wars fanboys and girls are just looking for a reason to validate their opinions over why Star Wars is still relevant in this day and age. Sure, Star Wars used to be relevant when the films had a much more organic look to them but when George Lucas started to "update" and "upgrade" his movies that's when things began to go south really fast. And things just gradually got worse when Lucas began to film his prequels.
I believe this video says just about everything that needs to be said about the prequel trilogy.
You know, it's a shame that George Lucas owns Star Wars because if he didn't..it could get a reboot like Batman did.

The style is similar, but the content of ME2's story wasn't all that fantastic. ESB and ME2 both fit the role of dark, backs against the wall middle of the story, but that's about where it ends. Story-wise, the only thing really outstanding about ME2 was the side and loyalty missions and LotSB. The main course, so to speak, left a lot of us feeling pretty underwhelming(at least I did.)
I want to rip out their eyes and violate their skulls!
But seriously, I just laugh because in my mind I know Mass Effect is by far superior! ME doesn't have teddy bears from space or aliens with giant fish heads!
I won't go as far as to say Mass Effect is a SW rip off. Though I will say it is inspired by Star Wars as well as Star Trek and many other popular sci-fi adventures.

And mediclorians!
Kinda odd Bioware in it's Star Wars game( and any other game company) ignores mediclorians.
