Well, the Alliance navy shooting Sovereign on the Citadel DID mirror the Old Republic Navy taking down the Starforge...

Well Bioware created KOTOR so they are ripping them self off?

Well, Jacob Taylor is black, so he's clearly a rip-off of Jolee Bindo.

Their first names also both begin with a J. This is obviously not coincidental.

IMO theres nothing wrong with the prequal Star Wars movies...I like all 6 movies equaly and believe it or not I thought Haiden Christinshin played a good Anakin Skywalker. But aside from that I dont really care if other SW fans get upset over ME because I think ME is just as great as those giants (deff think it's better then Star Trek...sorry Patrick Stewart)

I'd just say "okay." Can't change their opinion anyway even if it's a bit misguided.

...Um, I know this probably sounds a bit juvenile but I gotta be honest here, whenever somebody calls Mass Effect a Star Wars rip-off it really makes my blood boil. I think Mass Effect is much more than simply a Star Wars rip-off. I mean sure it was influenced by it (like many other Sci-Fi projects are,) but that's like saying The Spectacular Spider-Man: Animated Series (2008) was a rip-off of Spider-Man (1994) because it had a repackaged Spider-Man vs. The Lizard episode as it's pilot.

And I know Shepard dying in Mass Effect 2 and then being brought back to life, is sort of like the moment where Han is frozen in carbonite and then thawed out but...it's not enough to call Mass Effect a rip-off.

I laugh. There's all sorts of homages to other science-fiction movies and books, but to call it a rip-off is to completely miss all the differences and the unique combination of elements that make up Mass Effect.
And it betrays the ignorance of the person making the comparison as well. It would be clear to me that whomever is making the comparison is basing it off of reviews and articles on the net, and not by personal experience.

I usually respond with, "If it's a rip-off of anything, and I'd dispute that it is, it's Babylon 5."

I've never heard/read anyone claiming such thing. And if they think so it's their prerogative. I personally don't think so, and that's my prerogative.

If only Jedi could use the Force to charge their enemies and shoot them with a shotgun.

@Zombie Chow they can, there is a form of a shotgun at least in one of the Star Wars Games. Star War Republic Commando, now just give it to a Jedi :)

Remind them about how John Williams ripped off Holst's "Mars" for the score.

The Star Wars theme was ripped off from Eric Von Korngold's soundtrack to King's Row.  Lucas even told Williams he wanted something that sounded like Korngold before he began work on the score.

You can hear them side by side here.

It's an indefensable lift of someone else's work considering it's the main theme and not just some passing phrases here and there.  I've heard that King's Row was the temp music Lucas used when he gave the scenes to Williams to score but I'm not sure where I heard that or if it is in fact true.

I really don't care when people say that. Actually, I have never heard someone say this. I truly believe Mass Effect is the new Star Wars, though.

There are haters and idiots that attacks almost everything of ME from the plot to the characters. I don't care a f**k of any of them

Hmm... very interesting. As a Star Wars fan myself, I have to say that Mass Effect has never reminded me of SW in any way while playing it. More than that, it made me completely forget about SW's existence for quite a while.

Sci-fis often contain elements which are very similar, but that results from the fact that they are from the same category (at least in my eyes).

If we were to compare the two, they both have different positive and negative aspects. You could say that ME is a bit more 'realistic' based on the fact that the story takes place within the Milky Way, and with the addition and history of our solar system, it makes the story more personal and meaningfull to the fans.

I love them both tbh.

Um, in my opinion the only thing that's really worth admiring about the prequels is the eye candy and the music because the characters were pretty much blank slates. You didn't know much about them and no effort was made for character development and growth. Anakin was very much a whiny little kid who grew up into a whiny young man. Natalie Portman was great but she wasn't given much material to work with. The young Obi-Wan actor was able to gradually transition into the Alec Guinness character but I always felt like there were four or five scenes, I missed, that ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor.

Sure, there were a lot of things happening during the prequel trilogy but I always felt like the dialogue lacked polish and I didn't know who these "new" characters were well enough to really give a damn about any of them. And these characters didn't have a moment that instantly made them likeable. The best movies, always have a few moments that make you latch onto the principle cast emotionally and in my humble opinion the prequel trilogy didn't have that. I know I'm gonna sound like a heartless bastard when I say but I honestly didn't care when Anakin was separated from his mother because I didn't like the character and I didn't like Jake Lloyd, so I was like Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, I didn't give a ****.

I know I went off on a bit of a tangent, here but seriously why should anyone care about the prequel trilogy when George Lucas decided to make his principle cast of characters into blank slates with annoying actors playing them. (i.e. Hayden Christenson, Jake Lloyd and whoever the hell played Jar Jar Binks.)

If ME continues the trend of adding bazillion amount of bidepal sentient races then its going to feel alot like Starwars.  IMO, Starwars have always felt cartoony and more to a fantasy side also.  Mainly due to the inclusion of Jedi / Sith, if there was any game about Starwars it seems like too much focus is on the Jedi or Sith.  It makes non-jedi feel erm... neglected esp in the mmo sense.

Everything is a rip off of something else.

or at least "draws inspiration" from something else.

to answer the OPs question though . . . I just point out all the things that Star Wars itself has ripped off and that nothing is without it's flaws.

To OP: I haven't had it happen yet, but I'd be kind of angry. "Inspired" would be a better phrase than "rip-off." Besides, Mass Effect is pretty open in what it's "inspired" by (most sci-fi out there).

Star Wars also began from pre-exisiting ideas such as the religions that went into creating the Force. (Forgot what they were called...)

To be fair, the story of the original Force Unleashed was almost as good as the original trilogy. I don't know what they were thinking after that, though...

I don't think mass effect is like star wars at all. There are no plot similarities that i can think of. They both take place in space... thats about it.

Me and a friend usually have a debat in which we discuss how Mass Effect is better than Star wars.

(But he stubornly insists on defending star wars)

The argument revolves around what ships are better, the story it's self, Spectres vs. jedi's and wich side would win in space combat. Then some how it ends with how we like both of them just as much and how we don't like star trek at all.

My little cousin (10) is a big Star Wars lover and he runs around with his Adept using the "Force" as he calls it to lift and throw  his enemies in combat. He thinks its cool but he doesnt see it as a Star Wars rip off.
