"It's a particularly interesting choice because one of your earliest
party members is your sibling (your brother or sister, depending on what
class you chose), and as you might expect, a whole lot of baggage comes
with them."
Sorry not sure if this has been answered yet or not in some other post, but I was wondering if we only get to have one sibling
around permanently or not? Is it possible to have them both stick with
you permanently?
Bethany or Carver? Do you have to choose?

David Gaider and Luke Kristjanson have written at length about this on the Escapist Preview thread. If you haven't already read their posts, go hence and be educated.

Apparantly, the situation with Bethany/Carver is at the very beginning, and the player doesn't get to choose which sibling lives and which dies.
I suggest reading the comments in the thread Seb pointed to. Choosing which sibling lives or dies would be a fairly ridiculous choice, especially at the beginning of the game when you hardly know either of them. The fact that some people here have meta-information on the fact that either of them could be companions (and some evidently already decided which they wanted, despite knowing nothing else about them-- or even if they were permanent companions) doesn't change the fact that most people heading into that situation wouldn't and shouldn't know anything about it.
Your sibling adds a lot to the story, and we've included two as opposed to one because the dynamic fits very well with your particular character's story (and their class). And that's all there really is to it.
My suggestion is to pick the class you want to play and see how it turns out. If you wish to do metagaming convolutions beyond that to try and engineer the story you think you want, by all means, but we take no responsibility for it.
