The choice thing cemented me picking a mage on my first run. Usually I play a dual-wielding warrior, but I can't anymore...and being a mage seems extra special in DA2, so I pick that. Plus, I'm more interesting in having a brother than a sister.
You can't have a dual-wielding warrior? [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/andy.png[/smilie] My brother loves that archetype. So does that then mean you have to pick between sword and shield and a two-handed warrior? They both are too slow for me because I'm impatient.
Actually, the new sword and shield and 2-H warriors are faster in DA II. A lot faster, some members would say. And no, now only rogues can be DW.

Awesome I might end up playing a two-handed warrior thenif they've made it quicker.

This. While it’s not really confirmed one has to die; the fact it has been confirmed that when one does die the choice is based on your class just rubs me the wrong way for some reason.Collider wrote...
And I HATE this. It should be because of choices my Hawke makes, not gameplay balance.andar91 wrote...
It was revealed that one always dies. Bethany joins you if you're a warrior or rogue, and Carver joins you if you're a mage.
I’m not even really sure why because normally I’d support gameplay over story descisions.

And I don't even understand why the whole 'need for balance' thing should come up - in the opening of DAO, unless you're playing the mage origin, mage characters don't join the party until the Battle at Ostragar and it's not a problem getting through the origin story or the Kocari Wilds without one.
If it really is class that determines who lives and who dies, it really does leave me with the impression that they're trying to force replaying the game as one or the other, which I find... irksome to an extent.

This. It should be based on how well you fight and the decisions you make. Not something arbitrary like what class you choose. If I seriously mess up, I want everyone to be able to die Aveline, Carver, Bethany, whatever the hell the mothers name is, everyone. That would be interesting. Assuming it wouldn't be harder to get them killed then to get them out alive, like in ME2.
But that won't happen because people who don't understand trial and error will **** and moan.

I like Bethany and Carver, but I have a feeling Bethany would look up to Hawke more than Carver, so I want Bethany moreso than Carver. Playing as a mage, I am unlikely to get this, but with the situation rumored above, it would be marvelous..

Why can't bioware just do Warriors dual wield with swords, and rogues dual wield with daggers...
Anyway, if i can't keep both ill keep Bethany!

He noted that no matter what choice you make, you will always have a living Apostate Mage in your family.
Just a thought. Don't judge the game so quickly. It may have to do with deeper story telling.

You claim as such when we know nothing about the game. Everyone is judging the choice as something shallow bioware is doing to give the game balance. I've never seen an example of them making a decision just to give you balanced combat unless it is also related to the story. Two apostate mages in the greater scheme of things may not work out for their intentions. I doubt they'd just kill off a character unless its for a deeper purpose I'm a little tired of hearing about this Carver / Bethany bash. Just replay it twice and see what happens.
Thank you very much.

I hope they don't do to Bethany and Carver what the ME team seems to be doing with Kaiden and Ashley. They're just place holders for eachother at this point.
I personally don't think so but I can't say for sure. All I know is ME's team is NOT DA's team. While DA is borrowing elements from ME to make it a more accessible game, which jades a lot of fans at the cost of pulling in a newer crowd.
I see relevency in the story if the only surviving immediate family left is your one sibling. It helps for storytelling, especially since the concept of having a sibling define your character from the beginning to end is a very tricky thing to do in RPG. Its much easier to start tabula rasa then give you a character who has known you your entire life and is your companion at arms. Two may not be feasible in the story telling sense.
EDIT :: As for the sibling choice based on career path, it may or may not have to do with only limiting one apostate mage within the Hawke family. Who knows? Maybe what it came down to was they wanted to avoid a Hawke!Warrior/rogue-Carver combo, since it is necessary to have at least one Apostate mage for the story. I can't say, but I'm personally okay with this since I can play the game twice and happily get to know the other
I'm open, but I'm tired of these ME comparisons. There are similarities to the advertisement and certain areas of direction, but I can't say for sure. I haven't played the game.

If that is the case. I'm pretty sure most people here have replayed DA:O at least twice, maybe more.

I think the case is you don't seem to understand the forum for a game that isn't even out yet isn't just so we can profess our undying love and trust in the game developer. If that's all you want to do that is fine. Notice I never asked you to stop. So if you could kindly return the favor.HolyJellyfish wrote...

Yes. Well, you were the one who knocked me down by calling the Apostate mage idea "Deep". I have a right to be defensive, I don't appreciate sarcasm and cynicism directed at my posts unless it is in good humor. So yes, I will call you on it and I will get defensive about my opinion.
This is true. But there is no way of knowing if this is a bad decision or a good one yet. I'm not professing undying love, I'm just as blank slated as you are.
I'm sorry you feel that way and I will leave you to your opinion.
