I am seeing something similar on a friend's machine. XP home Service Pack 2. The game installs and runs, but after you generate your character, it crashes to a runtime error. Any ideas what can be done? Does BG1 run on XP?

@sfairb your computer can't play the video. Two things mainly cause this; reinstall your Direct X, then look at your player... you probably have something trying to play default videos i.e. Realplayer etc... open media player and try to run the demo.
@the_critical_process you have a different issue... yes bg1 works well on xp... check your background programs and that you have enough save on your c drive (xp likes a gig) then open a separate post with your computers details.

What version of BG1 do you have? The original BG1 game on 5 discs, or the 4-1-pack or the BG1 DVD?
If you have the original BG1 with 5 discs, have you tried installing it in windows 95 mode? You could also try having each individual disc spin all the way up and all the way down before you put the next cd into the (dvd)drive...
Also, please remember to patch the games. I'm not sure where to find these patches. A long time ago a post on sorcerers.net pointed to the patches, but now I think following the link form there they just points back here?
They could be on filefront, though...

I'm not sure of his computer details, but did you say I should look to see he his a gig of empty space on the HD BG1 is installed on?
It's the original 5 discs, but I understand if you put in the expansion TotSC, you don't need to patch, ya?
What did you mean by letting it spin up and down? I'm not sure what that means?
How do you install it in win 95 mode? I didn't know that was an option in XP.

If you have the expansion for BG1, you'll need the patch for TotSC. I dug around a little bit and I think maybe Spellhold Studios now host the BG patches. About the spinning up and down, when you put the
cd(s) in the drive, the cd will spin for a minute. Let it spin to it is finished before clicking ok, then when the game asks you to change cds from say cd 1 to cd, change the cd, and let it spin till it is finished again. Rinse and repeat.
To install a game in win 95 right-click on my computer (the icon), then right-click th dvd-drive, then click open,. the find the game's exe file and right-click on this, then choose compatibility, and choosee win95 mode. The disc probably have autoplay so that it goes into into install mode; please click exit. And then please follow the steps I've described above. However, I have never found this necessary to do with BG1 and BG2.
I think maybe he means RAM, as in 1 GB of RAM or 2GB or RAM...

Your c drive is (by default) the hard drive that you have windows installed on.ussnorway wrote...

As far as the CDs spinning and so forth, the game does instal, that isn't the problem. Patch for TotSC.. will have to get that, yes. If the game installs fine but doesn't run, re-installing with the Win 95 compatibility could work? Actually, it runs, but, as I said, after generating a character it crashes with a "runtime error".

No, I think he (or she) means 1GB of RAM for XP. It is a bit unclear, but XP prefers 1GB of RAM to work properly.

If you abselutely can't get it to work, you can buy BG1 for 9.99 US dollars at http://www.gog.com. It comes fully patched with manuals as well as with Tales of the Sword Coast. I've dug around a little bit and found patches for this game, and BG2 hosted here:
http://www.blackwyrm...net/patches.php
Please also remember that for BG1 and BG2 as well you'll need to download the correct patch i.e. either the UK or the USA/CAN patch or the International patch.
