Strongest squad member Shepard has had as of yet?

Physically, my money is on Grunt, since he was engineered to be the strongest and fastest of his species, essentially a pure Krogan.
All around best to compliment Shepard, I would say is Garrus, although Ashley and Wrex come in close seconds.

Physically, probably Wrex or Grunt.

Also Miranda has by far the best synergy with Sheppard, simply by benefit of being a sentinel class.

At least from a design standpoint, she has a very wide range of abilities that deal with nearly everything and allowing Shepard to clean up. Especially on higher difficulties.
Grunt though is pretty tough though. Jack also, at least in the "fluff". While she isn't too great gameplay wise the fact is that she is the strongest human biotic.

I am sure that Ashley could knock the sh^t out of Miranda. Same with Jack.

Taking biotics into account it would be hard for anyone to beat Samara/Jack.

It's like if you took something almost as pure krogan as Grunt, then added Jacob's level of biotics, then gave him Zaeed's battle experience, you get Wrex.
So I'm not surprised he took down a Thresher Maw or united the clans. It's a pity he could be killed so easily on Virmire, but then again, I never been shot in the back of the head like he has. I imagined that'd suck.

Well excluding biotics Ashley is physically stronger than Jack and Samara, but including biotics then I agree. I personally think Jack's biotics are quite a bit stronger than Samara's, Jack is supposedly the most powerful biotic, but Samara undoubtedly has more control over hers.
Thane's is pretty powerful, but physically he is one of the weakest characters due to his Keplar's syndrome (see the Shadow Broker's files on him, he has trouble breathing and a weak endurance.)

Samara, her biotic powers sure are something.
Liara's no slouch either, though canonically she's probably not reached full potential or skill the way Samara has. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of experience Samara has in applying that skill in combat situations.
Physically, probably Wrex or Grunt.
I'd say Grunt, due to the genetic engineering and the simple fact that he's a whole hell of a lot younger than Wrex, though it might not be by much. Regardless, I still think Wrex would win if those two got into it. For one, he's also got biotics. For two, he's Wrex.

Jack is the most powerful human biotic. Lore-wise, Asari are stronger than any other race when it comes to biotics, though of course some individuals will be weaker than the strongest human biotics.

As a martial artist, I'd say Thane. From what we know of his past missions, he's pretty darn impressive.

I don't recall Samara taking out two YMIR mechs, or something equivalent.

Yeah, but he is dying. He has numerous health conditions, such as trouble breathing, less endurance, etc...
Physically he may be stronger than people like Tali, Mordin, and Jack, but definitely can't stand up to people like Garrus, Jacob, and Zaeed.

Right, because it's not like she's lived for centuries and done all sorts of stuff we never see or hear about in the game.

gameplay wise in ME2 I must say Liara....simply because she has 1 defense strip, 1 area crowd control and 1 single defense bypassing crowd control....
Lore wise either jack or samara

Also, don't forget Morinth: she's equal to her mother as of Samara's loyalty mission, and supposedly she'd keep gaining strength.
This is true, I'd say Morinth is quite a bit stronger than Samara.

We're going with lore here, or the character's realistic capabilities.

Defense-wise, grunt and garrus put up a good holding the line fight

Grunt for physical strength (Wrex is more awesome but he's not a super soldier)
Jack for Biotics
Legion for tech studies (for him it would be second nature)
All I can think of right now....

He means lore wise, within the context of the universe.Ultra Prism wrote...
If you mean strength offense-wise: using two biotics as squadmates are very effective, or use Kasumi, shadow strike comes handy ...

Not gameplay.

Garrus > Thane > Tali
I agree. In terms of physical abilities, Thane is among the lower rungs. I'd personally put it something like this:
Strongest
Grunt
Wrex
Legion
Zaeed
Garrus
Medium
Jacob
Morinth
Samara
Ashley
Kaidan
Thane
Mordin
Weakest
Jack
Kasumi
Tali
Liara
This is going by their capacity in terms of raw strength, with Grunt at the top and Tali at the very bottom.
As far as overall superiority goes, in terms of biotics, It would go something like this:
Morinth
Samara
Liara
Jack
Jacob
Miranda
Kaidan
Wrex
^Seems about right.
