After the reveal trailer, and ever before it, I've seen a lot of people complaining about the spoilers that were thrown around throught out ME2 pre-release by the marketing. Some people even said that the ME3 reveal trailer was already spoiling things.
.
I was very surprised by this because I really didn't feel spoiled in any way by any of the trailer I'd seen, so I decided to create this topic. Looking back to ME2, what kind of spoiler you wish weren't in trailers and interviews?

As a person who loves to read the last chapter of the book before reading the book, i have no problems with spoilers but I can understand why others prefer to not be spoiled. It comes down to curiosity and discovery. A new world, new items. To have the story line abruptly hinted at, can end the curiosity for some. For others, it heightens the story overall. I would think it is difficult either way. Too much and you can ruin the experience for some, too little and you fail to draw interest.

I feel the teaser trailer was in good taste. Why do I say that? What do movie previews do? They show several scenes from the movie, true not every clip ends up in the final cut but the majority of the clips end up in the movie. While at the theater any person who saw the trailer would recognize several of the clips and know what's coming. The teaser trailer in this case in my opinion did none of this cause it didn't even show any actual game play.

Mentioning the Plot or returning characters.

For ME2 all I think they should've revealed was...

-It's in the terminus systems.

-It's gritty.

-You need to gather allies for a suicide mission (note how it is not explained what this mission is, also note neither Cerberus nor Shepard's death are mentioned).

-Maybe four new squadmates should've been revealed, not all of them (note NEW squadmates, don't reveal returning ones). Jack shouldn't have been revealed, that way finding out she's a woman would be more suprising. Tali definitely shouldn't have been revealed (epic suprise). Garrus should've been kept under wraps (especially considering how his arrival was meant to be a suprise, I'm thankful I didn't follow the ME2 ad campaign). Legion should've been kept a massive secret, seriously, I'm quite shocked at how EA showed off a character that would've really suprised the player.
My choice to reveal? Thane (everybody loves a warrior monk, and he's a new species), Miranda (fanservice in the form of good looks), Grunt (Krogan, gotta love 'em) and Mordin (Bioware knew too well that everybody would love him. He was just designed with that in mind. Also he's the first Salarian squadmate so...).

-Gameplay, classes, some guns and new powers, etc.

The ME3 trailer was all spoiler to me, but I don't know how BioWare can market a game like Mass Effect and not spoil it for the die hard players like us.

My approach is to avoid all ME3 ads, these forums, the BW main site, and any of the so-called reviews that are going to begin soon.

I don't want to know anything! (except the release date! lol)

Anything relating to the last 75% of the main plot.

All side missions and first 25% of main plot is fine.

The reason why people(including I) consider the reveal trailer spoily is because it shows the attack on Earth. While we knew it might happen it would have been better as a surprise, plus as people said anything that happens past middle or is shock value that is told to you before you experience it is a spoiler.

For example in ME2 markting we where told...

Shepard dies at the start

The collectors are the true threat

That people can die during the suicide mission

That Thane is dieing

That Garrus was a squadmate

Legion was also a squadmate

The list goes on and on of things that where spoiled before ME2, I would hate for Bioware to do it again but because the reveal trailer shows the attack on Earth(which Bioware should have kept secret...) that is a spoiler since you now know the Reapers will be hitting Earth.

I don't consider the reveal that much of a spoiler. But I also had no idea that Garrus was going to be in ME2. I have bigger blinders, apparently.

For me it wasn't a spoiler. I can understand others frustration about this subject but it comes down to the player. A spoiler is subjective. What you may consider a spoiler may not be in someone else's eyes.

Most leaks and trailers, to me, arn't spoilers for one reason. Yes you may know that something happens but you don't know how, when, why or where, not necessarily in that order. That leaves you to brainstorm possible ways that it may happen, pull together clues and form a general hypothesis of the story.

There are alot of things that arn't for certain yet. So things could change.

But like I said the view of spoilers is highly subjective.

The ME3 trailer was fine, i mean the description of ME3 is "The Earth is burning". They had to reveal what the game was about.

What went wrong with ME2's reveals was that it told of the Normandy being destroyed, Shep dieing, all the squadmates revealed, your main enemy in the game, what the suicide mission actually was and the fact that all your squadmates can die. That was the whole plot of ME2 revealed before the game even came out, it was ridiculous.

With ME3 they just need to give an overview, the general direction of the plot, some new characters and gameplay. THATS IT. That's all that's needed.

For me it's only a spoiler if the main entertainment value came from the reveal. Like Jack being a girl, if you already know who jack is, it's not as entertaining, as having the character be completely opposite to your expectations.

The reapers attacking earth thing isn't so much a spoiler imo, because im guessing that's gonna be the main point of the story. To me it's like calling spoiler if someone said ME was gonna take place in space.

edit: but like others have said, what is a "spoiler" is highly subjective. some people like to experience everything fresh, like they're actually living it, me i rarely feel a different experience knowing certain spoilers or not.

Seriously, how much of "People can die in the suicide mission" is a spoiler? Its a frakkin suicide mission! More like stating the bleeding obvious than a spoiler.

How much do you take the trailer for canon anyways? One of the trailers for ME2 had Grunt and Thane alongside Shepard on Horizon, yet you cant get Thane until after Horizon.

More than likely, the trailer is showing a potential outcome. We have heard that there will be time based decisions in ME3, this could be a result of doing too many "kill merc" side missions than concentrating on your job.

Apparently what I consider "spoilers" is what EA considers "Marketing"

After the first game I did not wish to know anything about ME2. I thought it would be just as epic. The only trailer I saw was the dead shepard one with legion. That being said I avoided everything that had to do with ME2 prior to my preorder arriving and my playing it, I wanted everything to be a surprise and it was, even legion I had forgotten about him. This time around I don't care about the spoilers since I wont be playing it until 2012. and will forget all about ME3 spoilers I see between now and May.

How well would a game sell if the interviews went something like this;

Q) Can you tell us what changes have been made in regards to game mechanics?

A) Not telling.

Q) How about RP choices?

A) Not telling.

If your not interested at all in any spoilers whatsoever, then bury your head in the sand and ignore everything to do with ME3 until its released. Any information about ME3 from now on will coontain something which can be used to "spoil". Anything from a single screenshot, slip of the tongue by a dev, anything.

If you went along and actively sought out the ME3 trailer to watch, then you actively sought out spoilers for the game.

^^ A spoiler to me is anything that reveals any plot. Movies do it all the time, so do the insides of book covers. The trailers video games release are spoilers as well. But like it was previously mentioned, no one would buy the game without the spoilers. The key is to release as little information as possible to gather interest but not reveal the end game.

There have been countless movies that I've decided not to watch because the whole plot was revealed in the trailer.

I love game-play, but the story is the main reason that the ME series has a place on my shelf. If anything other than game-play and maybe a few squad members is revealed, that's a spoiler to me.

That is what I am doing with Dragon Age 2 and I'll probably do the same thing for Mass Effect 3. In Mass Effect 2 I really didn't care but I knew who the characters were (for the most part) and for Dragon age  I didn't. I had more fun not knowing who were my allies. But this may chage after Dragon Age 2. I missed one character in my first play through of Dragon Age and I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for one of my friends.

Once the ME3 information starts flowing I intend to avoid these forums until I've completed my first playthrough. After that first playthrough I tend to spoil myself silly. I missed Leliana on my first DA:O playthrough, which was a shame because she was my favorite LI.
