A bit late to the party, but Quickthorn's fanfic is well worth the read for Valen fans, and fans of tieflings in general! Speaking as a living, non-stone, Light Side human who only goes to the Fade when dreaming, I found it very inventive and well-written.

Hello all,

 

This is my first post here and it looks like it's several years too late, but I've really enjoyed reading your posts and looking at your pictures since I found the thread.

 

I absolutely adore Valen and wondered if anyone could please offer some help? I'm not very computer friendly, I turn them on and press play on the game I want to play

 

An admin on petals and thorns has been kind enough to send me the erf and read me files for the flirt pack but I'm having a bit of bother with it.

 

I've put the erf files into an erf folder that I made as I didn't have one previously (It's a fresh install). 

I've removed the XP2_Chapter2
& XP2_Chapter3
from the NWM folder and put them onto my desk top as the guide told me to. 

I've started up the toolset but I can't find the above files to open them in it, which I assume is because I've removed them? 

 

Could anyone please help me out? thanks in advance xx

 

I actually think I've sorted it now, I didn't put the two files I needed into the modules one - silly me xx

I have just started reviving my old Valen-crush and found out about the existence of the flirt pack O.o I have seen several references to a "baby talk" with Valen, but have found no traces whatsoever of what is being said in that conversation. I have even read through the mod files in Notepad (I have no life) to try and find something, sadly with no luck. Anyone care to share what the "stage 6 missing baby talk" is?

The only "baby talk" I've ever seen referenced isn't in the flirt pack but in the original game files. Basically, in Ch. 3 after Valen admits he loves the PC, you can ask him what his plans for the future are, and if he's in love with the PC he'll eventually admit that he wants to have a child. It's super adorable, and even if you say he's moving too fast he doesn't get upset; conversely, you can offer to make a baby with him right then, which he'll decline, also adorably. You can read the whole thing in the xp2_hen_val conversation file starting with:

 

"I am yours to command."

 

"Let's stop and talk for a moment."

 

"Talk?" He seems mildly taken aback... etc.

 

"What do you plan to do after all this?" (sixth one down, which is why it's called Stage 6)

 

It's possible that this is one of the conversations that doesn't appear in the game without the Valen bugfix, which is why people refer to it as being "missing." (It's been so long since I've played the game myself that I don't remember. I should really give it another go after finishing Inquisition!) It is in the HotU resources, though, and if you follow those steps you should be able to read it in its entirety, with all its branching paths. Enjoy!

Hahaha,I looooove Valen! Every time talking with him just makes it impossible for me not to love him...and on top of that,he's incredibly handsome(the portrait)!! And one of the cutest moments in HOU is when he hums on the way,so damn adorable

His humming/singing are my favorite ambient banters in the game! It's like he doesn't even realize he's doing it, kind of mumbling under his breath. I always wonder if Deekin is scribbling down his melodies as they walk. I mean, I love "The Doom Song" as much as anyone, but it wouldn't kill the kobold to change things up every now and then.

Sorry for chiming in, but concerning the Valen flirt pack: Does anybody know where to find the necessary .erf files? All the sources I've checked out have the .mpeg files, but the .erf files are missing. And ever since the Petals and Thorns site seems to be down, it got nigh impossibru to get to the .erf files that are needed to get the thing running. Or does anyone by chance have them floating around in their computer somewhere?

It's my first time playing HotU, and I'd really like to see the additional content in game.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe has erfs inside?  Dunno.  Must get acct to DL, tho.  They show it cost money to DL but it Free if don't check plan box just skip. All nexusmod files DL fine for me.

 

I am thinking just play Ch2 & Ch3 mods instead of Bioware ones should work but I donna try.

Here's the link I found on the vault. I've never used the flirtpack myself, so I'm not sure if it has everything you need. When I downloaded it, it looked like it just contained mod files.

If you've never played HotU before, you absolutely need the Valen Romance bugfix if you want the full experience. The romance will proceed fine without it, but it contains additional conversations for Ch. 3. These conversations are in the toolset, but they won't fire in game without the fix. According to the notes on the flirtpack, those files include this fix, but if you can't get that one to work you'll at least want this one.

I believe there was also a Mimic Dialog fix floating around at one point, where special dialog with Valen would fire when interacting with the mimic in Ch. 3, but I can't find it anywhere. Maybe someone else knows where it is?

 

I hope you enjoy the game! It's my favorite of the NWN 1 campaigns, and Valen is a great romance. Feel free to come back with any other questions you may have! We're a smaller community here these days, but some of us still lurk every once in a while.

Thanks a lot for the help, you two! You've helped me out a great deal, and one of the moderators on the Petals and Thorns forum is still checking up on a regular basis to see if there's still anyone in need of the missing files, which is amazing. I'm actually surprised that there are still so many people who play the game and are interested in bulking up the romance, haha. 

 

As for the mimic fix, I could get my hands on that one as well, so if there's anyone who needs it (or the .erf files or w/e), I'd be glad to help out.

 

And... I've all dived into the campaign now and I'm enjoying it greatly so far. Aside from the Alistair romance back in DA:O, I don't think that BioWare has delivered another that even in its vanilla state is so rich in content and well-executed. Valen's a truly amazing and multi-dimensional character, and other LIs I've seen in games pale in comparision. His development from a distrusting ass who resents you for stealing the spotlight to him absolutely adoring you makes me melt, indeed.

He's well on his way to becoming one of my favorite LIs ever, maybe even absolute favorite.

I think I ended up using Nathyrra the most in HotU, I always managed to upgrade his flail though, just seemed like something that should get done.

 

Er well until Aribeth showed up, naturally.

 

But yeah I remember this guy... kind of unusual to have a tiefling companion in a game.

I must confess, it's sort of interesting to see a fan base popped around this character! I honestly wasn't really that into it he wasn't my favorite character.

 

Hordes had some interesting ideas and such I think, the large scale and epic nature of it at times. Plus, the ability to reunite with Aribeth and all that, I think overall though I found it less interesting than NWN: OC.

Valen with Deekin lotsa fun so much to keep Valen on party even when Aribeth show up.  Valen really donna like the way Deekin sing

In Valen's defense Deekin can't sing. And as one who has a lovely singing voice himself I imagine Deekin's off key singing gets on Valen's nerves.

Valen and Deekin are my favorite party combo in Hordes (sorry, Varric, but Deekin is the king of nicknames), but Nathyrra gets some great conversations with Valen, as well (my favorite being the one where he asks her what the drow women are saying about him), and her character arc in general is pretty compelling. I really wish you could take all three at the same time, that would be so much fun.

 

I agree, Caprea, that one of the greatest strengths of both the Valen and Alistair romances are the way they develop over time. Especially given how little content the HotU romances have compared with Bioware's more recent games, it's pretty impressive how well done Valen's change of heart is.

Hello there everyone, I'm really glad to see that there is a somewhat active thread for this guy - I've never joined a fandom so late, oh my.

 

I'm kinda going back in time because my first experiences with video games happened a mere one and a half year ago and after the cinematic presentation of the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series (and never dying love for Fenris, Nathaniel Howe and Thane), it is a bit surprising to explore such a different interface and gameplay. I really wish there were more opportunities to talk to our henchmen in general, I talked a lot to Nathyrra and Valen; their dialogues are very well built.

 

Valen captured me at once by not trusting me I like how he can be both realistic and teasable at the same time. I got to the point where my character asked him about how he escaped from Grimash't and then I could not access more dialogue options until the closing battle of Act 2 came. Should I have received the confession ( ) by now?

 

Anyways I'm quite stuck with the game because as the battle progressed, suddenly the game started to handle me as a betrayer, although I had told the Valsharess before to go peel potatoes and leave me alone. I don't know what could have went wrong; before that, in the undead settlement, the cult monks kept spawning although I destroyed all of their coffins and Lavoera never appeared so I guess my game is a glitch store I try to load an earlier save and see if that works. Can't miss out the tiefling, he is really one of the best written LIs.

No you don't get a confession from Valen until the first part of Act 3.

I see, thanks a lot! I thought the great moment comes in Act 2 based on Youtube-demonstrations, but now I can calm down, for the moment

 

The reload helped, now Lavoera was there when she should be, I managed to save her. Sodalis also showed up again, he didn't manage to do it last time as a rogue vampire monk slided into the cutscene and ruined his great return. The battle now went on with me as the goodie - it's another issue that I was beaten into the ground, but at least I was defeated without the game glitching I try it again today (thank god the cheat engine exists).

 

The dialogue at the illithids where Valen recommends using the special helmet was sweet as hell. Dark and broody manservant, lulz.

I'd like to share my little drawing of my PC's and Valen's first meeting. 

 

As I was listening to him, it occured to me that despite the fact his past resembles the background of Fenris, Valen's manners recall Nathaniel Howe - the same kind of modesty and courtesy, even their voice actors sound alike a bit. However, Nathaniel may not be so shy like Valen in a romance, but I guess we'll never get to know that now (at least canonically). Tiefling knight in a shining demon armour

I loved Fenris, but to tell the truth, aside from the similarities in their backstories, Valen hardly ever reminded me of him. Fenris is the dictionary definition of grumpy and he often behaves rudely on purpose, even after being befriended or romanced (especially in a rivalry romance). However I think the grumpiness of Valen is more contained, and it is mainly based on the fact that he does not trust the PC in the beginning. When he is more friendly/romanced, he leaves that attitude behind and becomes very respectful. This is why I had Nathaniel more in mind, he also becomes really courteous when you gain his trust.

 

And I agree with your opinion on their romance development, even as being a great Fenris-fangirl. Valen's romance seems more sincere, more nuanced and overall, more thorough. At least that was my impression after one playthrough

Hey guys!

So I decided the other day to play HotU and ofc romance the heck out of Valen... Though I tend to be a dum dum and forget to talk to him myself, and then I realized, right when I was talking with the Knower of Names that I haven't talked with him enough to actually start the romance ... Is there a way to use any commands to "trigger" some new conversations with him? The recent one I had was him talking about how he was struggling keeping himself calm due to the war going on. I know there is tons more conversation but I am afraid that I have screwed up and I can't get to start the initial romance before I talk with the KoN.

Anyone got some suggestions? I sadly don't have any old saves to go back to, to maybe spam-talk with him some more.. :c

I'm certainly no expert when it comes to console commands, but you might have missed the boat on this playthrough. Nearly all of the romance building conversations happen in Ch. 2, so I'm not sure if the resources are even there in Ch. 3 for you to trigger. If you've already gotten to the Blood Wars convo, I don't know if any of the earlier conversations will be available for you. What options are available when you say "Let's stop and talk for a moment."?

 

If the "What was it you wanted to say earlier?" option is available, you might be able to trigger more conversations that way, but I think those are usually for the ones Valen initiates.
