I bought Mass Effect on DVD and got through the prologue to the point
where you have to speak to Joker for the Normandy to land at the
Citadel. After speaking to Joker the game plays the landing cutscene
normally, but once the cutscene ends with the Normandy's approach of the
Citadel and the screen goes black I hear some sound like a door opening
and the screen remains black. I left my computer on overnight and it
still stayed black. I could still alt-tab to task manager.

Com specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo4-F
1GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3850 256MB
Onboard Realtek AC97 Sound
Windows XP Pro SP2

I was running the game in 1024x768 with medium textures and high particle effects.

I updated my drivers to Catalyst 8.5 and the latest Realtek drivers.
Also
tried to uninstall and reinstall Mass Effect, and tried starting and
playing new characters to the same point, and tried turning everything
to minimum at 640x480 but they all gave the black screen at the same
point.
I hope you can help me! :S

I wouldn't have considered the 8.5 drivers particularly up to date at all (over 2 1/2 years old now). The current drivers are at 10.12.
