The Tevinter Imperium were / are a nation ruled by mages and are not averse in various forms of magic banned and suppressed by other realms such as Bloodmagic. That they have power and are still around is a fact, considering what happened in the Allienange.
Now consider the Grey Warden's joining. I don't know about you guys but doesn't the whole process of mixing, preparing darkspawn blood so that we can drink the concoction smells smack of Bloodmagic?
Consider too what the Chantry teaches, that it was the doings of Tevinter Mages who became the first darkspawn. Whether this is truth or just religious dogma remains to be seen but if you take the core of what is thought without religious suppostisions, then we can assume that it was the mages in Tevinter who dabbled in magic and whether intentional or not became darkspawn. It would then be logical that the Tevintians themselves would have to fight this initial "blight" as it were and thus came up with the formula to give thier armies an edge. Any army that can feel where and when an enemy is near would definitely have an advantage and I am pretty sure that the Tevinter Imperium would not hesitate to use this advantage. Hence the true origins of the Grey Wardens.
So far in game, looking for and reading the codex found in regards to the wardens seem to point this way and possibility and I have not found enough to discount this theory. There are way too many blanks to be filled in regards to the Grey Warden's past. Not to mention what actually happened to all their griffons which in all likelyhood seemed to be a magical manufacture and not "naturally" born. Again I haven't found enough codex / notes / history into that regard (both in game and out in regards to Dragonage) to discard the possibility that the griffon mounts weren't originally magically brought into being.
Anyways, its just a random thought that stuck with me while playing the game.
