I recently read that the recommended system requirements for Dragon Age
Origins was a 2.4 quad core processor. I currently have an E8400. I'm
contemplating selling the E8400 and getting an Q9400 processor, which I
will attempt to overclock. I know that LGA 775 is at the end of the
line but I don't have the funds or am I ready to make a jump to the
i5/i7 platform. If I do get the Q9400, I intend to keep it for at least
a year or more. The rest of my specs are as follows: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
G.Skill 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 4-4-4-12
XFX Geforce GTX 260 216
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 32
LiteOn DVD Burner
Audigy2 ZS Sound Card
Dell 2209WA 22inch monitor
. I game at a
resolution of 1680x1050.
Since this game appears to be optimized for
quad core, do you guys think an overclocked Q9400 would be better than
an E8400? Thanks.

The devs said a 3.0ghz C2D (your E8400!) would do just as well as the recommended 2.4ghz quad. So unless you have another compelling reason to upgrade, no need.

Unless DAO is very much optimized for quad-core, I would say that your e8400 will still knock it out of the park. I mean, it's not exactly Crysis.

Quad core is not necessary. Honestly, the CPU recommended requirements are probably a bit of overkill - if it's a decent dual-core, then it's not going to have any detrimental impact on visual quality.

Thanks for all of the replies. I appreciate it and I'm sure my wife does since it means no money out of my pocket except for the price of the game.

And of course your GPU is great. I think that plus your dual core will max this out at 1920x1200 nevermind 1680x1050.

Yeah. I like my graphics card. I don't see the need for a 5850 right now but maybe in another year or so. I love my monitor and don't foresee buying a new one in the near future, so my max resolution is 1680x1050.

You may consider taking a look at AMD/ATi hardwares. Currently a HD5770(not 5870, this one is by far cheaper) and the top of the line quad-core AMD CPU(X4 965 3.4Ghz 8MB) will cost only around 400 bucks added together.
Of course, that means you will also need a new motherboard(which by far again will be much cheaper than an intel i5/i7 motherboard). You can also choose to at the same time grab some DDR3 memory.
Lastly, the official word on the game's optimization is that only dual-core is optimized. The official word states that a dual core of the same Ghz as a quad core will not notice performance difference between the two.

The 5770 isn't faster than his GTX260 216.

I have heard somewhere that the engine is basically the Mass Effect engine just modified. That would mean if you could max out Mass Effect chances are you can max this game out.

Not that this necessarily means anything, but I have a Core2 Quad Q9550 and I've noticed that the CPU usage just in the Character Creator is quite heavy, and it definitely likes using multiple cores. I can't say if the game is any different, but I'm happy to see the CPU getting some good use.
