Colonist, as it goes very well with Sole Survivor. Earthborn and Colonist also have interesting missions, where as Spacer's is kind of...dull. Plus Colonist has some extra dialog in bring down the sky iirc.

Colonist (mainly paired with Ruthless.) It has an intresting story in it. And the side quest, I Remember Me, is just amazing. The dialog is said so emotionaly and all. Truly beautiful in my eyes.
It is my favorite. While I like Earthborn and Spacer too, Colonist also make ME2 understandable. You grew up on a colony and know how it is and ho it works. While I like Spacer for you having a family and Earthborn for the fact being in a gang you can relate to Jack a little bit better, since you've seen things you probably shouldn't. Each background is unique in a way.
My point being, if I had to choose a fave, it would be Colonist. But I like the other 2 as well.

I'm always Earthborn. I like the roleplay room given by that background, I feel more attached to humanity being a native of Earth as well, and I'm a sucker for the "orphan -- rags to riches" type of stories/heroes.

Spacer. I think it's cool having a family in the military.

Argh! I only noticed all the positivie feedback on the Colonist background after my recent 7th ME1 playthrough last week. I think I have to do it again, but I do appreciate the heads up.
I've played both Spacer and Earthborn in both ME1 and ME2. I happen to like Spacer a bit better, I think. The Spacer sidequest of helping an alcholic seems mundane at first, but illustrates how Alliance soldiers look after one another even after their military service.
Plus, even though I don't remember the exact dialogue anymore, I really liked the conversation between Shepard and her mom. It was surreal how totally military this family was. It was like:
Shepard: Hi mom. Sorry I haven't called recently.
Shepard's mom: Hi honey! So, whatcha been up to?
Shepard: Went to Eden Prime, lost Jenkins, then the Council made me a Spectre.
Shepard's mom: Awww, that's too bad about Jenkins, honey. Don'tcha worry, you'll get another red shirt.
Then the ME2 email was even funnier. It was such a typical mom thing to write, yet so badass military at the same time, "Honey, I been so worried since I heard you died in that Geth attack, how come you never write me?"

I like spacer, just because you have a family. It gives me more immersion for some reason. It makes Shepard more real.

Colonist; the little sidequest is very interesting, and I really, at the time, thought that that woman would kill herself, lol.

I like both Earthborn and Spacer. Colonist is okay, but it's a little to cliche for my taste. It did have the best assignment though. With earthborn it makes my Shep feel that he had something innately good in him to make him give up a life of crime to better himself. With Spacer, it's the only background where Shep has a family, which is pretty rare in adventure stories.

Earthborn makes a lot of sense for a renegade Shepard. Rough childhood can really mess up your head.
For paragon I like colonist, loss of loved ones is a great motivation for becoming a hero.
I prefer the spacer-background though, that way Shepard was from birth raised to be a soldier and explains why he is such a great leader capable of saving the universe over and over.

Colonist and War Hero, gives you a great reason to not like Batarians and you're not short of opportunities to be jerks to them in both games.

Colonist. the side quest is extremely well written and emotional, as is the email resulting from it in ME2

Colonist, with Sole Survivor.
I like that Shepard has endured much and continues on stronger than before.

I like all of them...I don't really have a major preference. I do prefer Earthborn for Renegade playthroughs though.

I find that colonist and War hero is fun and that whit paragon Shepard. The feeling that you had it rough but you want to make others have that you never had and that Shepard has endured mcuh and wants to continue stronger and tougher than before.

Colonist is my favourite. Humble people getting slaughtered by the bad guys and Shepard surviving and becoming ruthless because of it makes me feel a bit like Josey Wales. My word of death is true. My word of life, not so much...

Spacer. Not only the 'hero' part of it. but knowing you have a family can be a very nice anchor.
