i have all 3 in different characters, but i prefer earthborn for renegade and ruthless/sol survivor and Spacer as a paragon and war hero.

colonist i don't really like. i just for some reason don't feel a connection to it

colonist/sole survivor but my fav is earthborn/war hero

I"m a sucker for the underdog- the scrappy orphan that turned the other cheek, made something of herself and showed the Alliance that the 'orphan kid' could become a hero...

Colonist/War Hero is my fave background for my Shepard. He is a paragon.

I like the story a lot and it gives a great RP background to my main Shepard.

He survived Mindoir and was psychologically broken but got his life back under control and made an oath to never let anything like this happen to anyone else. Mindoir is the perfect fit for his actions during the Blitz imho of course.

He knows how bad things can get but as long as you keep your humanity you will always be victorious.

The only way to keep the peace is to unite every race in the galaxy and beyond.

My favorite is Colonist/Sole Survivor. As a kid, Shepard alone manages to survive a deadly attack. And as a marine, Shepard is again the only one tough enough to survive several Thresher Maws, presumably on foot. How tough is that? I forget which planet it is, but there are 2 Thresher Maws simultaneously, and you have the Mako, and that is a bit scary. Imagine fighting a group of Maws on foot, without your SPECTRE gear or training, just basic Alliance training, by yourself, and you are among of the first humans to even encounter those monsters.
I saved this combination for my 3rd playthrough. I played as a Paragon the 1st time, and a Renegade the 2nd time, using the examples below. On my 3rd play, I played as I truly would. Mostly Paragon, with a Renegade temper (against criminals, and anyone who was aggressive or condescending), and I feel that Colonist/Sole Survivor is the combination that least fits a specific moral profile, and thus compliments your own style best.

I also like a Paragon Earthborn/War Hero. You start out as a petty criminal orphan, but abandon the life before you become a more serious criminal. You then risk your life saving fellow marines from the frontlines. I don't see any other combination being more Paragon.

I like Renegade Spacer/Ruthless. Growing up in a military family would explain the strict discipline you exhibit and a no-nosense attitude you have for your suboordinates. Also, as a Ruthless person, Torfan is the epitomy of a Renegade's thinking. Marching your men to their deaths to ensure no enemies escape alive is the most Renegade thing you could do. Furthermore, Renegades tend to have dialogue options in which they distrust alien species and the Council. If your parents were in the military, and maybe even your grandparents, they would be more hostile to aliens than the average human family because of the First Contact War, even if they didn't see combat there. A Spacer just makes sense in the situation.

too be honest it depends on how you play

Paragon: Earthborn, War Hero (increases the percentage your paragon increases by
Renegade: Spacer, Ruthless (increases the percentage your renegade rises by)

(my Mass Effect 2 guide confirms this and should be the same for ME1)

I tend to play as a Paragon but I do not fully follow this I go for Colonist and War Hero because to me it feels like he (i play as male shepherd) saw his life get destroyed and decides he does not want that to happen to anyone else and decides to achieve this by joining the alliance and in his determination he manages to become a war hero.

I also think it sounds more noble in my opinion

I prefer to mix things up, during separate playthroughs.

I do like both - Colonist/War Hero & Earthborn/Sole Survivor combos, equally, the most.

A survivor of a Batarian colony raid, goes on to play a big role in defending another colony from the same fate.
As for the other, that Shep honed his/her survival skills looking out for him/herself on the streets and refused to give in during the Thresher Maw attacks.
I have one Spacer/Sole Survivor combo, just in case we get to meet Shep's mom in ME3 with that background.

I never cared much for mixing Spacer with War Hero, sounds too bland for some reason to me.
I've never found the Ruthless background appealing, so I've never used it..

I started with Colonist/War Hero, because I found it most interesting at the time.

Now all my recent Shep's have been Earthborn/War Hero. It's just something about total scum becoming hero. And it also means that there is good reason for not being scared for dirtying his hands, so I can use Paragon and Renegade options, when they feel better for the situation.
