Well you must of seen a different Bosnia to me then.

Quite possible... and i didn't mean to compare it to laying in a Trench, storming at a MG nest or anything that happened on D-Day. I simply meant to say it doesn't matter how you got shot at.

and i do not know where you have been exactly in Bosnia, but my patrol was shot at twice. Which is by far lacking in comparsiation and was quite harmless compared to today in Irak.. or what happened in Afganistan. But i actually did kill in line of duty, and i was shot at. And thats nothing pleasant to remember.

So yeah, i don't know where you been and what you happened to see there. 2 engagements in 6 months made it a very peaceful stay for me too. But that doesn't mean there weren't 2 engagements and people we shot and have been shot at.

And if you had bothered to read on, i hope it wouldn't have escaped you when i said that i only meant to compare it to being shot at as soldier.

Certainly i do not want to imagine how it was in WW2 or vietnam when people were desperate enough to kill each other with spades in trench wars or crawling through tunnels.

So yeah, i don't know what Bosnia was for you and i certainly would hope your patroul never was shot at, but as it is... it happened to me... we didn't have to drive through burning wrecks, deal with the stenche of the death in the morning or storm up some sandy beach in what i believe the most stupid idea ever to be carried out in history... not by far.

But having people shoot at you in an intent to kill you, with automatic weapons... i don't think its much different.

I can imagine he'd rather be thought of as a jerk by us, the gamers, instead of how the rest of the Citadel space community probably thinks of him. To them, he is the equivalent of that crazy guy that runs through the streets, nude, with an aluminum hat on his head screaming about lawn gnomes that come out from under your bed during the middle of the night and take your underwear. Except in this case, the lawn gnomes look like seafood and the only thing they are interested in taking is slaves and technology.

I like playing a mix of paragon and renegade too alas ME2 seems to hate me doing that so I just cheat and max both my bars. :(

Also: Awesome story is awesome.

Thanks for sharing the story, Hathur; Very insightful view of CO attitudes and effects on the men they command from a WW2 veteran in relation to Shepard.

It's really cool that your grandfather is interested in something you like; Not many grandparents and grandchildren share their geekery.

Dude, your grandpa is epic. I completely agree with his views on the characters throughout ME1 and ME2, and his view on renegade shep.

Quite an intriguing read, all the more so because I had originally expected something akin to a rant about game violence. So this was certainly a pleasant surprise.

In any event, I do agree some of the Renegade choices are ridiculously "cartoon-evil" at times. Blatantly putting down Tali in ME seemed somewhat illogical to me. So can practically scream at her for no other reason beyond doing so far the lulz. Mocking Ash's dead grandfather is another. Despite this there are numerous completely plausible Renegade options. So I cannot agree with those here who have written off Renegade as mindless chaotic evil.

Please note the above paragraph was a generalized statement and not directed at the OP's grandfather, who is indeed pretty damn awesome.

Pardon me for being a pedant here but it was actually Ashley's father he mocked, not her grandfather. It may seem petty but there's a big difference between mocking someone who actually put his troops ahead of pride (the grandfather) and someone who was punished for what his father did (the grandfather).

Interesting story.

In my own opinion the best Shepard is a paragon Shepard who can make the tough renegade choices when he has to.

Thank you for the incredible story, Hathur. It was most interesting to hear the opinion of a man who have seen the real war with his own eyes... I quess replaying ME 2 next time I will judge my actions a bit different.

And thanks to your grandfather, of course!

Well, usually my first run tends to be into a tendency to paragon also. There is something that has been bothering me when i try to do runs as Renegade. If you want to do a full run as Renegade is almost impossible to do romance or whatever.

There are actually 2 ways to go renegade, one is a renegade that is actually afraid and wants to survive, no matter at what costs, and the other is a renegade that likes to screw people (kind of mass killer renegade) and takes advantage of war for this. Most side quests, as build your friends morale or other are actually based on helping others. So, this means that i have a tendency to pass around 90% of the content and screw all quest with my screw you tendency.

What i want to say is, if you really play a pure renegade in the game you will most likely get your entire crew killed and end up alone with no romance whatsoever.

The fact that your grandfather disaproves the renegade shepard because it looks too much as in real life, i think it is just another prize to deliver to the writting team of bioware, and the way they build their story.

This was an awsome post man. Most people do not realize what soliders give up and think that its filled with nothing but honor and glory. They simply do not know or understand what happens unless they've seen it first hand. Tell your Grandfather thank you for his, and all of his friends sacrifice during WWII. From a US Army Medic. Happy holidays to you and your family.

Awesome story- if you haven't, you really should sit down and record some of your grandfather's stories so they can be passed on. I did that with my Grandpa who flew a B-17 in the war and some of his stories are amazing and I'm really happy to have those recorded.

That's cool.

@OP, Hathur, if your grandpa is up to it, recording his stories would be awesome, challenge the history books that only tell part of the real story.

My family has recorded my grandma telling stories from her life and it's a treat to listen to her, so I think it would be the same with your grandpa, if he wants to share.

And to clarify, my grandma did not serve, but she's a great storyteller and has experienced a lot in her life.

That's really awesome to hear, actually.

I found that the Paragon responses were a lot more believable as well, but I've never seen death and destruction like your grandfather has. I think a good mix of 'gon and 'gade go really well into defining Shepard as a person and as a believable character.

I'm glad your granddad made it out alive and likes ME. That's really cool!

Thats a generation, I as a Swede will never meet. My grandpa although came from Denmakr, died to early to tell em anything of the germans although.

Anyhow! Wonderful story! Things like these makes life interesting and seperates it from fictional stories. I wonder how our generation (mine 80's) will give to our grand children?

Very nice! Good thread!
