And then after the initial punch, if the enemy is staggered enough, button prompts for other melee attacks should come up, Resident Evil style. Either that, or each weapon should have individual melee animations again, like in ME1. Every time I did melee in ME1, I switched to the pistol because I hate rifle butting. It looks so lame.

However I would like something that can get you out of the situation when about 8 husks surrond you (I'm looking at you, room in the Derelict Reaper with the Dragon's Tooth) before you'll lazily beaten to death. Although that'd be better as an on-the-spot explosion type power...

Maybe a short Turian fencing mini-game would be fun.

I would say no as a weapon to just pull out and chop with, that'd be useless since it's next-to-impossible to get close to enemies without being gunned down on any difficulty besides Casual.
My vanguard on insanity disagrees with you about the difficulty of getting close, but he still agrees that there should be no lightsabers.

Not really. I've been doing melee on large mechs and bosses all throughout my current playthrough of ME2, and I'm playing on Insanity.Eli-da-Mage wrote...

Plus Halos energy sword was super dumb, and i hate that game.
Mass Effect is ALMOST the only sci-fi genre series i like.

I think you meant,
Let Halo be Star Wars and Mass Effect be Mass Effect.
