I think it would be cool to upgrade the basic melee attack, maybe with some sci fi weapon or something. But melee doesn't really fit well with the cover system, so it shouldn't be an important mechanic.

Okay here is my opinion. I think that Shepard should NEVER use an energy sword. Still I'm not saying that energy swords or whatnot don't exist in the ME universe. But Shepard is not going to become a magically proficient sword fighter. Neither is anyone on her ME/ME2 crew. That is not saying that it is impossible. There would have to be a specialize party member who could use the sword and not as a primary weapon cause they would be dead so fast, but maybe something more like Kasumi's shadow strike and be special move for the character. Still, I don't think that energy swords will be a huge part of any ME universe and will NEVER get in the hands of Shepard.



As for all the Halo comments... the closest I've gotten to playing halo is watching RvB, and I'm happy with that. So I can't say how alike/different ideas are to the Halo universe.

This is why there will never be melee weapons in the Mass Effect games. For everybody that wants a perfectly reasonable sci-fi military CQC weapon, there's some jackass who wants a lightsaber.
