I'd rather have some sort of "futuristic/advanced" combat knife (functionally just a normal combat knife) that Shepard can shank people with.

While there are those types of characters none of those seem viable paths of action for the player and the kind of emotions they get from hte player aren't the right kind.....mainly frustration. And they aren't sufficiently identified to be on the player's mind. Now that ME3 closes the trilogy they need to redeem the series and show us what they've got in terms of storytelling and branching and choices though I'm not holding my breath.
