Running PC version of Mass Effect.

Digital download from Steam.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.100618-1621)
System Model: HP EliteBook 8540w
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.6GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
GPU processor: Quadro FX 880M
Driver version: 260.99 (latest)
CUDA Cores: 48
Core clock: 550 MHz
Shader clock: 1210 MHz
Memory clock: 790 MHz (1580 MHz data rate)
Memory interface: 128-bit
Total available graphics memory: 2779 MB
Dedicated video memory: 1024 MB DDR3

When I start the Mass Effect executable from the Binaries folder the process starts, but then ends after a second or two. It just disappears from the processes list in Task Manager. I don't get any error messages whatsoever. The process takes up about 7-8 Mb right before stopping. This problem happened on a first time install of Mass Effect, so I wasn't able to play it from Steam at any time.
I have verified the game cache in Steam and it all checks out. Mass Effect 2 runs smoothly on my computer. I actually had Mass Effect installed on my device before. A friend installed it for me. It ran well. I removed all traces of it (as far as I know) before installing the Steam version.
I reinstalled it three times, which didn't prove helpful.

I have the 1.02 version installed. Bring Down the Sky is installed.
It says that MassEffect.exe is at vers. 1.02 in the Mass Effect Configuration Utility. The launcher is at 1.01, the configuration utility at 1.02.

I have tried running MassEffect.exe as admin, in all different compatability modes and ran Steam as admin and started Mass Effect from there. I also tried replacing OpenAL32.dll with a newer version, as was suggested in a topic I read. I even shut down my anti-virus (Kaspersky Internet Security). All of these things did not help.

I contacted EA's live tech support who weren't able to solve my problem. The guy helping me out was probably using a script though, so I can't blame him.

If you need any other information, I'll do my best to provide it. I'm really bummed I can't play this game and I don't want to start ME2 before having played this one.

Thanks in advance!

I got a message that somebody replied to this thread but I don't see anything :/
And why was this thread invisible in the forum's topic list  before I posted? Weird.

Since the Quadro isn't a gaming video graphics card, there will be no one able to assist, since we do not deal with commercial workstation graphics here.  Look that Quadro up to tell us what real Geforce graphics card it used to be before its BIOS was flashed to make it better at creating graphics than it could have been at running these games.

But it ran on my computer before. It should be able to run again.

What do you mean by what it used to be like?

What worked? The first game? From the CD or from steam? How long was it working before you had problems?

The CD copy of Mass Effect worked fine. No issues whatsoever.

The Steam version I installed does not work, however.

And why do you not have the CD copy now? Seems weird to have had the game and then bought the game again on steam.

Did you check your logs of what's happening when you try to start the game? Something somewhere is not playing ball.

On a sidenote i really hate notebooks and when people try to game on them. It's like trying to create fine art with a childs paint by numbers set >.>

If Steam is the only variable that's changed here, try turning off the in-game interface for Mass Effect. (Right-click on it in Steam and select "Properties," it'll be somewhere in there.)

Of course, it may well not be the only variable that's changed. Have you upgraded any drivers since the last time ME worked?

I swear that this was answered.  Although I don't understand why you uninstalled the game if it worked properly.  Did you own a different copy that you've since done something odd with?

Both AMD and nVIDIA produce and sell more "normal" end-user graphics hardware than they do of PRODUCER hardware, which costs more and is used far differently.  However, both of them start off exactly the same.  The Quadro is reflashed from its Geforce origin, and given a new internal product ID, and different BIOS.  In some regards, it can still be used the way it would have been before it changed identities, although not as efficiently.

I had to uninstall the game to clear some space on my hard drive and later I lost the disc somehow. When it was on sale on Steam I figured I'd get it again, together with Mass Effect 2.

So I downloaded a no-CD executable of MassEffect.exe and now the game has no issues starting up. I don't even have to run it as admin. How strange.

Please do not discuss bypassing the DRM. At the least, your posts will be erased, but for breaking the ToS that way, you could earn a ban from posting.

I might add that the game loads up it just is slow at it and than when i do load up any time I either change settings or play the game and it goes to save the game it will save w.e i did but than it will just stay stuck on the saving screen.

I was not aware that broke the ToS and I'm genuinely sorry for that.

It's ridiculous I had to go to these lengths to play a game that should be running properly on my computer to begin with. EA's tech support was anything but helpful. Believe me, if they would've provided me with a solution I'd prefer to fix it the right way. I'm a huge fan of BioWare's games, but when I buy a game of theirs I'd like to be able to play it as well, otherwise I'd just make a donation.

We have already gone over the error in that reasoning. You want to use an unsupported graphics device, which requires special handling to use, and only accidentally worked for you previously.

Patched it to the latest version and it worked. Steam version wasn't updated for some reason.
