Mature, adult oriented plot with complex turn based gameplay.Ryzaki wrote...
Honestly though if you want a good JRPG recommendation you have to say what you like in a plot and gameplay. Like WRPGs all JRPGs are not the same.
(Likes JRPGs)

Saga Frontier II
Final Fantasy Tactics
Vagrant Story
Parasite Eve
I know they're older games but that's mostly because I stopped playing most JRPG's after KOTOR.

...Hm...I'd also suggest Suikoden Tactics though that is more of a shakey on the mature side (it is about a war however and I love the strategic combat).

Now Atlus, THAT company is living proof that JRPGs are not dead. The SMT and Persona games are among the best I've ever played.

I really enjoy those games.
I also enjoy playing Dragon Quest and Pokémon. So light and kind of shallow, but that just makes it so entertaining.
Nier is also a pretty good one. And Demon's Souls is pretty good too, though not a JRPG pur sang.
I like both WRPGs and JRPGs, versatility FTW...

Save for Lost Odyssey, the last JRPG I loved, and beat was Final Fantasy 9. I was 19 at the time. This was right before I was introduced to Baldur's Gate. So, maybe there is some correlation between age and the particular styles of RPG's?
All of that said, I still maintain that "someone" can release a game that blends all of the best parts of both genres together. To me, Dragon Age 2 is getting damn close. Maybe WRPG's can perhaps get some epic music for once? I heard Nobuo Uematsu is looking for work.

It's interesting... I am the biggest supporter of JRPG's, and the ones from the golden age of the 90's (Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, etc.) influenced my game design, but at the same, the last JRPG I beat in this DECADE was Lost Odyssey. In that time, I've completed Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Fable 2, and Mass Effect, and other WRPG's.

You know, this is what I have been trying to tell people all this time. Square/Enix should outsource development of FInal Fantasy XV to Bioware and Bioware should only bring in the talent of a few notable people who were involved with the series while handling most of the design themselves.

On the subject of JRPG's anyone liking the look of Catherine? It's from Koei and looks brilliant.
Atlus is developing Catherine. Probably the best JRPG developer/publisher right now.

Seconded. Final Fantasy should never be made by westerners ever.

You guys still trust Square/Enix after Final Fantasy XIV? Makes me wonder what it would take for them to actually lose your trust.

Outsourcing Final Fantasy to a western studio would do it

We don't need cheese ball "interactive" romances and a dialog wheel in JRPG's. We just need a bit of a change in direction.

It looks so disturbing that I want to try it.
Oh by the way... Anyone tried Nier yet? Quite different from the usual JRPG you'd get your hands on, lately.
