I think the game deserves props just for the fact that the main protagonist is NOT an adolescent. That is an extreme rarity in JRPGs.
That!
And yeah, it may be not original but still it's a breathe of fresh air coming right into ya if you're a fan of action-rpgs and want something way different from the usual emo punks who cry that their whole life is a mess, and stuff like that.
I'm looking at you, Sasuke.

Uh, what? Since when? That's like saying Modern Warfare 2 is the reason that TPS games don't get the credit they deserve.
Hate speech removed:ph34r:.
You do realise Blue Dragon wasn't anything to do with Square Enix, right?UBER GEEKZILLA wrote...

I didn't realise most of them had that affliction. I've only tried playing a JRPG once: the protagonist was like Wesley Crusher, only more annoying.Busomjack wrote...

I quit playing before I completely lost the will to live.

The Japanese got their emo kiddie version with the brother/sister relationship, which worked since it sold very well in Japan on the PS3 (their xbox version got the old man and that didn't sold as well in Japan).
It was such a shame that Cavia (the developer of the game, Square Enix just published it) went bust after this game. Looking at the interviews Cavia and Square Enix, they really put quite a lot of work into the game (they even wanted to release DLC for it). I haven't played it, but the soundtrack is amazing.

That's harsh. You make it sound like its only Square Enix is the only one who makes JRPGs. What about Atlus? I mean, they made Persona series and the upcoming Catherine. So why JRPGS = Square Enix?
And don't forget that Square Enix used to be Squaresoft.

Blue Dragon was made by Mistwalker, runned by the guy who originally made the Final Fantasy series. Mistwalker also made Lost Odyssey and the upcoming The Last Story for Wii. I won't comment on if its good or not since I haven't played it, but I did go to a Japanese Game Symphony a few years back, and Blue Dragon's soundtrack was played and it was amazing (composed by Nobou Uematsu who composed the music for the original Final Fantasy).

- 90% are rather visual novels with grinding. No roleplaying at all.
- story and gameplay are often completely separate things. I can't take seriously even the darkest main plot, because I'm just fighting with MISSILE-SHOOTING BARN or LEVITATING GAS-PUKING DUDE IN A WASHING MACHINE(?)

I think the whole Fabula Nova Crystallis thing was extremely pretentious and overly-ambitious. It's seems Square/Enix was setting out to create the ultimate, epic, multi-part saga and they just were totally unprepared and completely blew it.
Final Fantasy XIII's fan response has been polarized and Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Agito XIII are nowhere in sight.
Actually I have a bit of hope for Versus XIII, mainly because of the people square has working on it, Tetsuya Nomura worked on FFVI, VII, VIII, X and Parasite Eve as well as the Kingdom Hearts series. Kazushige Nojima, the writer of most of the games Nomura worked on is also writing.
Basically it seems like most of the staff worked on the earlier games which I liked rather than the more recent ones. So I haven't lost hope yet, also the stuff put out so far does look very interesting.

So smart. ¬_¬ So... Smart.
Sarcasm apart, people shouldn't judge a whole a genre just because of a bunch of crappy games. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of WRPGs people overlooked or were a bit underrated. It's all about personal tastes, really. But going mad on boards and writing stupid things in caps doen't make you a cool guy, it makes you a big fool who's not doing enough research on the matter and calls himself a fan of RPGs (J and W included).

I think you might want to look up the definition for hate speech, and have a second look at the site rules, cause this aint it. While moderators certainly reserv the right to arbitrarily censor whatever the feel like, please don't pretend that you are backed up by anything more than your own judgement.

It comes under #3, which really needs to be expanded to include "Uninformed Utter BS and Trolltalk", which would quite easily cover the post we're referring to.TheMufflon wrote...

§3 Clearly refers to flaming and insulting other community members, unless the post is directed at such it is not in violation of §3. Expressing a dislike for a genre isn't flaming, not matter how strongly worded. I suppose it could be construed as a flame bait, but it certainly didn't look like it and it certainly wasn't hate speech, which is a very specific term.
This was clearly a case of §11.

back on topic, I think another problem with JRPG developers is that they've abandoned many of their most cherished franchises. For instance, why in the Hell doesn't Square/Enix make a new Chrono Trigger/Cross game? Those games were both excellent and original, also why did Square/Enix just give up on Xenogears and let Namco spew out that pretentious Xenosaga garbage?
