If Ortan Thaig and Caridans Cross hadnt been seen in 500 years, how are the Legion of the Dead (led by Kardol) beyond it waiting at Bownammar?

Presumably there are other routes to Bownammar. Remember that you go to CC and OT to follow the Branka's trail.

I agree. You don't have to pass through Caridin's Cross and Ortan Thaig to get to the Anvil, you just have to get to the Ortan Thaig to find out where Branka went. Bownammar was the old Legion stronghold.

Actually I thought of two very sensible potential reasons:
1. Branka's party already cleared a path in getting as far as they did, and the Legion warriors followed this path.
2. When they speak of how long it had been since seeing Ortan Thaig and Caridin's Cross, they may be speaking of the regular army troops, since those are the only ones who generally return from the Deep Roads and might therefore be in a position to tell somebody about it. The Legion warriors are supposed to be legally dead, and are not supposed to ever return from the Deep Roads. Presumably the only reason you can meet Kardol outside the Assembly Chamber is because he is a commander and thus permitted to come up to receive orders from the newly crowned king, but even that seems to be a minor break with previously established canon.

The problem with this is what you see in the DN origin. You can't be in the cell for very long as Bhelen wants you out of there before someone steps in and saves you and because Duncan (who is there to go on the expedition you were on) is still in the tunnels. It's a few days at most. Already, the area you completely cleared out is crawling with darkspawn again. Unless Kardol and the others were following close enough behind Branka so that the darkspawn hadn't come back then they couldn't have followed Branka's path. Also, if they had done this why wouldn't they have noticed the slaughtered darkspawn and why would they not believe that Branka could be found?1. Branka's party already cleared a path in getting as far as they did, and the Legion warriors followed this path.
