When i say this i mean..in particular what are some programs i could use.

You can use the DDS converter 2, or install a DDS plugin in photoshop or gimp.

where can i get gimp.. ive heard it mentioned a few times now.

http://www.gimp.org ; you may have to search for the dds plugin, as I don't remember if it's included with the default installation or not.

Ugh..Cant find a DDS viewer for gimp now. THe one i did find doesnt work. Q_Q.

Do you use photoshop? Cause nvidia has a plugin for viewing and editing dds files here, and as for GIMP the codec required for viewing dds is here but if you run a 64 bit system you're sorta out of luck with GIMP
