Having played DA repeatedly for a year now, I've often wondered why Sten was caged in Lothering when he tells you during his personal quest that he was attacked by Darkspawn near Lake Calenhad.  If you listen closely to his dialog about losing his sword, you can tell the references to Lake Calenhad were added at some point after the initial VO was done because the tone of his voice changes whenever he mentions the location of the attack.

The answer, I think, can be found in looking more closely at Oghren's personal quest regarding Felsi.   If you speak to her, you can get to a dialog option that asks her what she's doing in Lothering, even though you're speaking to her in the Spoiled Princess at Lake Calenhad.

After seeing this in my playthrough last night, the pieces regarding Sten's imprisonment so far from where he killed those farmers begins to make sense.  I would surmise that the original plot had his sword lost outside of Lothering, making it perfectly logical to have him caged there by the local Chantry.

My guess is that the idea to have Lothering destroyed was a later one in the game's development since not one, but two personal quests seem to have been initially set in that area. I know, I know, this isn't earth shattering news, but I found it interesting and thought I'd share.

Cool detective work! Lake Calenhad always seemed like a rather small area -- almost an afterthought. That would make sense if it were tacked on just to "rescue" Sten and Oghren's quests (which were supposed to take place in Lothering).

This is similar to having Shale being recruited in Redcliffe, and then later removed and made into a dlc.

If only Origins wasn't put on the backburner while Mass Effect was in the works. So many things cut, moved, bugs not fixed, etc....

The quest for Sten's Sword would've been much cooler if it could be done without being trapped in Redcliffe or forced to choose to abandon the village.

Since I always do the Mage's Tower first and get Yusaris, Asala is absolutely useless. Ever.

Had they let you find Sten's Sword earlier in the game . . . I would've used it.
