Don't remember if it was either the dalish origin or city elf, but you will chance encounter an "elf messenger" running around delivering messages. I found him first at the gate to the korcari wilds and later taking a break by walls overlooking the valley. In any case, if you succeed on a persuasion check, you can lie and get a nice 1 handed sword to start with. The text info on the sword is funny as well.

You can go around collecting money as "wedding presents" for the city elf.

There's quite a few options to go about numerous scenarios that the acquisition of an item may be had. There's the Key in Ostagar to the chest you can get but able to pass up if you didn't do the dialogue choice.

oh man... that's neat. I'll have to be sure to do that. Off the top of my head I can think of a few others...

In Redcliffe when you get the quest to find the little kid you can persuade him to grab you "The Green Blade" it's not an amazing weapon, but it's definitely not bad.

There might be a sword in the deep roads as well, I recall finding a hilt and a pommel, each of which gave me similar codex entires, but I never found the last piece(s) so I could never build the sword, or do the quest or whatever it would have wanted me to do.

The Topsider's Blade (deep roads) is in the Deep Roads, as is one of the Thorn of a Dead God blades.

A huge cool 2h sword named Ageless. It was ridicously wellhidden and only a master explorer such as myself can pat on himself on the back for finding such a gem. /brag off

I know for the Dwarf Noble, when you return to the Orzammar, you can get a secret sword from the throne room BEFORE you elect a new king. Active the pressure plates in the room and then use the throne. Don't know if this also works for a non-dwarf noble though.

There's also a random encounter that's very very rare which rewards a nice axe with the unique attribute 'Lucky', apparently.

it works for all origins not only dorfs

Stealing can get you smoe good items. I got a dagger with its own journal entry off a stealing check, and in the mages tower, you can steal good stuff from the 2nd and fourth summoning circle creatures. A good ring, and a belt.
