I just re-installed my Steam copy of ME1 and it runs fine until the begining of the first mission on Eden Prime, where it crashes. Trying to load it from the autosave brings up the loading screen but then it still crashes. I'm running it on a Windows 7 64-bit laptop and I didn't have problems playing when I first bought on this computer. I'd like to play through this again, so can anyone give me advice?

No. Not without proper information. Read the sticky about problem reports.

Recurring errors in the same spot often indicate a corrupt installation, especially when the game is otherwise working fine. This can mean some trouble if you have to re-install. The good news is, if the problem does lie with (a) corrupted file(s), nothing is going wrong with your system.
Since you got the game through Steam you can have it check your installation and make sure all the files are intact. To try verifying your files on Steam:
In Steam, right-click on the game and select "Properties." Select the "Local Files" tab and click the button that says "Verify integrity of game cache..."
If this doesn't work, you do indeed need to post specs like Gorath says.
