How are you hoping we'll beat the Reapers? A straight forward battle or something more profound?

I think Tali will finally use that Dagger she had strapped to her leg back in ME1 as some sort of Chekovs gun and kill off the Reapers with it in some way.

I'm guessing one of the very last missions would involve a lone Shepard traversing through a Reaper ship. The Reaper activates its self defence system, and Shepard begins to get indoctrinated. This could be very moving, Shepard could have flashbacks, imaginative figures of people from his past coming to haunt him. For example if you killed Kaiden in Mass Effect1, he will come and do something or another :P. The closer you get to the control room, the blurrier your vision becomes, and if you take a few steps back you recover a bit.

I like the theme, with Shepard having hallucinations and fighting to keep his sanity. You could revive a part of your background story, the Virmire incident and all the stuff.

I've posted this twice elsewhere already, but I really should've put it here in the first place (sorry!).

Here's how I'd like that final solo mission to go (see OP):

Important: listen to this - skip to 6:30 - and read:

Shepard is badly beaten, alone and naked in the dark - most of her companions are lost - the Reapers are whispering in her ear - she struggles as hard as any human possibly can to get to the light at the end of the tunnel - everything she's ever prepared for has been for this moment - the whispers are now screams - crawling forward, she desperately clings to the thought of all the people she's fighting for - the machines try relentlessly to crush her mind - she screams in pain - she almost doesn't make it - then one thought lances through the chaos: a figure standing in the void of her mind.. the figure turns to look at Shepard.. Shepard cries when she realises who it is.. and then the figure smiles at her - the Reapers make one final push - Shepard makes one final push back - she barely reaches the end of the tunnel - she nearly can't take it anymore - through the tears, she smiles, "I love you, Liara..." - she turns the failsafe key.  (wait for 7:35**)

Oh I know... very cliched.  But they could do it right.

**That should've taken a minute to read.

EDIT: Shepard doesn't necessarily die here; plenty of room for a happy or sad epilogue.  Maybe Shepard recovers and is reunited; maybe not  :)

Talking about mechanics, I am also expecting an epic boss battle. Yeah a boss battle but against a boss that requires mechanics more complicated than "shoot it til it dies".

A good example of a boss like this would be WoW's last boss on Ulduar, called Yog-Saron. He had this "Old God" Lovecrafty theme, destroying your sanity commanding you to attack his own minions (suggesting rage and bloodlust), and then when you had fight his tentacles enought time to "enter his brain" and revive some of his memories. After vanquishing those memories (that were related to important things on the past of WoW's lore), his real brain would be exposed and you could open fire. At one point, you couldnt "look" at him without losing precious sanity.
It was a very fun boss that required more survival and team skills than firepower.

Here is a video of the encounter on its "easy" mode:
Yah... it was complicated and full of booms and shinny things that could kill you.

Good idea , but what if Shepard has some type of temporary reaper counter measure , that can temporarily halt the indoctrination process.Giving him enough time to disable all the reapers at once.

I have no idea what i want for the ending, but i definatly want a mission like the suicide mission for ME2, where you split into teams, but THIS time you do each squads mission playable.

Example-

Pick garrus to lead diversion team.

After you finish shepards squads sneaky attack, the game blacks out and fades in with you playing as garrus, leading your diversion team.

Actually, an idea for the ending, each reaper has to be destroyed from the inside, and each reaper core is infact a portal to a new world which each hides the means for destroying that certain reaper.

Honestly, it better be something profound, since a straight up battle would likelty just lead back to another terrible final boss fight.

Best way to beat the reapers.... with a reaper. Somehow Shepard and his team attack a reaper... disable it....commondear it... and attack the other reapers. Mordin and Edi have got to be working on such an ability to counteract the indoctrination process (provided mordin stayed alive... anyway TIM's gotta be thinking it.)

Personally, I'm hoping for the epic space battle in the background, maybe several covert groups of varying backgrounds coordinating viral attacks, etc., AND Shepard's team doing their own mission deep into dark space, learning a great deal about the Reapers, uncovering soul-shaking revelations, and ultimately beating them with something other than guns (I don't know how, but something interesting and not simply a big boss).  The ending in Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos is one I really like (Spoilers, if you want to read these books) - they basically, in a way, destroy the bad guys with an idea.  I don't expect a copy of what Simmons did in that - it's a very different story anyway - but I would like an ending that's not only a lot of fun, but is also thought provoking and more profound than a simple battle.

EDIT:  Furthermore (and this is the most important part) this is roughly how I'd like the last part of Shepard's mission to go (cut from a post I made earlier):

"I really hope Shepard has to do a lone and emotionally harrowing mission in the end and does something special - the kind of special that makes Jack Wall want to write a 9 minute epic like Clint Mansell's final piece in The Fountain, and leaves an entire galaxy slumped in awe, love, and perharps even sorrow of the greatest hero the galaxy has ever had in its entire history*.

Extra: I'd love it if somewhere in the middle of the game, we have a mission similar to Virmire, where one of shepard's companions chooses to stay behind to save everyone else (I could imagine Jack in this) and gets their own scene like Asuka's final fight in Evangelion (watch from 3:50 onwards).  It's a very moving scene that initially inspires pride in the human will (in a way, Asuka is one of humanity's greatest champions) - but in the end, Asuka's victory is overuled by the inevitablity of armageddon, and you're just left with the hopeless feeling that the coming events are unstoppable.  Imagine one of our strongest companions in a similar fight, symbolically representing galactic civilisation the same way Asuka represented humanity, with the same heart-breaking result - I think that could be a really effective way of bringing home the gravity of the situation on a personal level.

*including every single cycle that's ever occured."

ANYWAY, how are YOU guys hoping we'll beat the Reapers?

-A straight forward Reaper boss fight?

-Send Jeff Goldblum to kill the Reapers' mothership out in darkspace?  (Do we even want them to have a mothership?)

-A straight forward but massive space battle with all the galaxy's fleets?

-A Neo/Smith ending where Shepard sacrifices his/herself and melds with a Reaper's genetic material and destroys them from the inside out, or takes control of the entire Reaper fleet?

-Something emotionally and philosophically powerful?

-Some or all of the above?

God damn!!!
That is greatest question ever & this is a great forum!!!
You realy narowed this down to the intelligent!!!
You seem to have the same outlook on the series as me
Although i can only guess how far the 3rd game will be from what you described...
I love the whole forum description & agree with you completely but something
this cerebral & damn awsome probably wont happen due to the fact that Bioware will
do what makes money...Gun fights make money & Earth makes money.....
So i imagine it will feel alot like Gears of War in the means that you will be
running around burned out buildings on a destroyed Earth shooting things 85% of the
game.......Maybe if EA hadnt taken over & Mass Effect 2 hadnt been so bad we would
have are harrowing & emotional finalie.......
Absolutely great forum!!!

Going full head first into the biggest war existance has ever seen. We have they're tech, they're blueprints and have foiled every plan they've had to this point. They may have been invincible in ME1, but with every possible ally in my side, the Collector Base and a lot of balls, we'll go in and serve the largest can of whoop ass that even Chuck Norris dreams of carving up.

Like a wise man once said: "Reapers are just machines, and machines can be broken".

Every one who knows me also knows how dissapointed i was with Mass Effect 2 in all.

This is a list of the things that i think our mutualy wanted in Mass Effect 3.

1.Drop the Ammo system!!!

I dont know who actualy bought all that "Thermal Clip" garbage but i thought it was the most pathetic

way to widen the games adiance.I hate ammo ,one of the reasons that Mass Effect 1 was loved so much was because there was no ammo!!!

I mean this is the future dudes, drop the ammo system!!!

2.Dont talk for me!!!

In Mass Effect 2 every time you would pick a renagade or paragon dialogue option the game would take

complete controll & speak for you for 40% of the rest of the conversation. If that isnt proof they have dumbed it

down i dont know what is."look dude my shepard is still yelling at that turian!"

3.Bring back the Mako!!!

I dont know what was so bad about having planetary exploration in a space RPG but

i want those bare planets back & i want my Mako back! No more straight walk through side

missions with a set path...Give us the exploration back you guys!!!

4.Over use of sex must stop!!!

Now let me explain before you start yelling at me through the key board.

In Mass Effect 1 the characters were dressed for the situation they were in (body armour)

In Mass Effect 2 , need i explain? every one was wearing spandex except for a few characters.

Cut it out!!!

5.Oh how the years pass!!!

Alright they did Mass Effect 2 in real time 2007-2010

& John Shepard was out cold for "two years"

In my opinion it was just an excuse for them to more smoothly rip all of the RPG elements out of the series , abandone the first games story & start a new with all of the shooter elements added.

I dont want to start Mass Effect 3 & find out that i was passed out for two years & had woken up in a gears

of war game.....Dont Do It!!!!

6.Do not give us a plot short fall of an ending...

Alright it happened with the show Lost, the writers created such a confusing & complex story

i assume that they couldnt figure out a plausable ending so they just said all the characters were dead

the whole time...

I dont want to see this happen in Mass Effect 3 so get to writing you guys & give us an ending

we wont soon forget!!!

7.NO MORE MINING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure i speak for most of the fan base when i say i dont want that consol killing , painstaking

& just plain boring planetary mining system to return in Mass Effect 3!!!

So what do ya all think (Dissagree) (Agree)

Weigh in an tell me you opinions...

Oh & lets not forget.....(Mass Effect 1 guns) POW POW POW POW POW POW !!!!!!!!!!

(Mass Effect 2 guns) tika tika tika tika tika tika tika tika tika tika..........realy you guys?what happened?

The only ending at this point that wouldn't include retcons and wouldn't appear like a deus ex machina would have to be the following:

1. Shepard and co. arrive on planet earth
2. They rescue as many humans as possible
3. Cause the sun to explode
4. Take advantage of the Reapers, who are probably without shields at this point
5. The rest of the game from that point on is a massive space battle against the Reapers

Reasonable. I just have to wonder...they've been depopulating the galaxy like clockwork, it was all the previous gen could do to slightly hamper the NEXT culling.Surely ALL the Reapers aren't necessary to depopulate a single system? I mean how did they get every last colony, outpost and refugee ship in all their previous attacks if they couldn't just press the "I win" button?

That absolutely killed me. DC1938 indeed. And no less a gamechanger if at all possible to recruit. Yeah you guys can sneak around in a trenchcoat and shoot .45's. Maybe even use some mystical mumbojumbo that you learned over the course of a decade, I'm just gonna go and pick up this car now...

I would kill to see a cutscene with a belligerant Krogan like with Grunt's release, where he tries to forearm slam my unassuming squadmate...or a badass biotic trying to be menacing their biotic energies reflecting on some old-timey glasses.
