Preamble: I know this is just my opinion but...

The only helmet I REALLY like:

original N7 helmet

Helmets that are ok:

Recon Hood
Death Mask
the visors

Helmets that are horrible:

capacitor helmet
kestrelhelmet

DLC Helmets that I WISH I could wear as single helmets:

The cerberus armor helmet

Again, this list isn't nearly all the available helmets, and this is just my personal opinion.

But I really believe two things:

1) The general design strategy for ALL the helmets/visors so far have been for a predominance on round features and curved designs, which I believe can be ok (look at the original N7 helmet) but has been really over exaggerated. being applied to all the helmets, especially for the sci-fi genre which usually has epic amazing jagged and straight line designs for armor and helmets. (look at things like Dead Space or Metroid for example, round to fit the head, but straight and jagged design for epic look)

2) Although it's a sign that the devs have noticed and understand the whole "no helmet toggle or collapsible helmet" issue, there is something that is very VERY ugly.

I hope you all know what Im about to say: the frigin mouth hole for helmets. I believe the devs have done this as well as releasing other head pieces that leave the mouth area open to try and downplay the whole character interaction problem with kissing and drinking, but at the same time it makes the helmets with holes in their mouth look really REALLY stupid.

Not to mention that for some reason when you wear a helmet like the kestrel and go to a place that forces you to have a hard sealed suit like the Normandy SR1 crash site, it automatically reverts to the standard N7 helmet. wtf. first they make us pay for dlc armor pieces, and then they don't work at least like they should? Was it really going to cost so much to finish the helmet and make a sealed mouth piece for hazardous environments? Really makes you feel gipped.

So yeah, I think it's kinda silly, but that's a secondary issue, I'm really just dissapointed with the overall look with the majority of helmets.

P.S.- Not to mention that the Death Mask would have been a million times more badazz if it didnt have those weird califlower extensions on the mouth and a straight edge that goes towards the back instead of the forehead portion leaning forward.

So what do you guys think?

All I have to say is that I wish there was a helmet toggle.

The kestral armor helmet looks horrible which sucks because the armor itself looks so cool.

I agree we should get a helmet toggle or even more evasive

In the cutscene shepard places hands on his helmet and removes it then holds it under his arm or hands it to one of his lackies while talking.

Or uses it to bash people in renegade interrupts.

lol I remember the first time I played ME2 and immediately deciding not to use helmets. It sucked because I never used the Dragon armor, Inferno armor, or any of the other DLC.

The way the helmets stay on during cutscenes was annoying and I could never get past how stupid some of it was. Like, when you go to Liara's office the first time and kiss her. If you have a helmet on, the entire thing is weird.

I'm fine with the Kestrel Helmet, with the right Secondary Color, and for me it makes Overlord more believable at the end.

I'd just like to have it sealable so I can use it anywhere.

Yup. Imagine Shep running around in one of those.

Or a Roman centurion helmet.

All I think most people are after, besides the obvious helmet toggle, is that all armor systems have multiple options and be as interchangable as the N7 armor.

On a side note, I'd love to see the ability to upgrade and alter the armors characteristics independently. For instance, if I like an armor, but would rather swap its 10% melee bonus for faster shield recovery, then being able to configure that at my armor console would be nice. I see this as a nice compromise between ME2's streamlined"

Sorry for the double post, the forums evidently do not play well with Android phones. I inadvertently hit submit and it will not let me edit.

Anyway, as I was saying, I see the above as a nice compromise between ME2's "streamlined" armor system, and ME's crazy inventory management (which I personally did not mind).

I would pay good money for DLC that had Shepard running around space in WWI equipment.

i don't think the no toggle on some armour was to bad, though armours like the terminus should of had a way to open up the front to show the face; this could of been done in the citadel for instants

For the LOVE OF GOD introduce a toggle!!!!

Seriously i have had to reload more missions due to forgetting to take a helmet off than caused by bugs. It my biggest complaint.

They'd have to record extra lines of VO for almost every convo in the game JUST incase the player decided to wear one specific helmet.  Does that make sense to you?

I disagree, Kestrel helmet is awesome. The whole set would be awesome if it weren't for the random LED's lining the body.

As for your first point. Derr. Heads are "round"... The helmet is (most likely) not going to be a pyramid.

I don't mind the no toggle for helmets in ME2. Play your first playthrough without one... Or heck, all your playthroughs. The armor doesn't matter, let alone the helmet by itself.

Please try and understand what I was trying to say, of course heads are round. That doesn't mean that every helmet they come up with has to be a ball with lights or missing mouth pieces.

Look at the capacitor helmet. Wearing that makes you look like a retarded Robo Cop that has a hole in the mouth so he doesn't get confused when he gets hungry or thirsty.

Or the Kestrel helmet, looks so frigin cool, but then you notice that AGAIN theres a big gaping hole where the mouth should be. >:|

My complaint is that there is a design strategy for all these helmets to be overly spherical and have round contours everywhere no matter what.

Where are the helmets that look more like the death mask? With come cool straight line/jagged edge design? They didn't even get the death mask right, but then they just stopped all together and only made round pieces of shi*.

I mean seriously? Pyramid helmets? That's just really condescending of you. Im pretty sure if you bothered to read my entire post that no one thought I wanted a pyramid helmet. Im talking about a more jagged, edge look to the contours and accents of the helmets.

What I was hoping to see in ME2 as far as general style goes:

And instead we basically got:

Except imagine the glass being blue and you get the capacitor helmet, or being completely black and you get the Kestrel helmet.

And no, Im not saying ME2 armor should be a copy of Samus or Halo or Dead Space, in case anyone didn't get it yet, I mean the style of the design should be more like that, with a round overall structure, but with straight lines and jagged edges to even out the balance of shapes in the design. And to actually make it look cool.

Edit: Please excuse the lackluster photoshop-ing of that last pic, but I was too lazy to do it right, it was for dramatic effect anyway.

You actually kinda like that thing?  It rivals, and may even equal, the Capacitor helm for sheer craptacular absurdity.   Either one makes Shep look like the sufferer of some very unfortunate congenital disorder and/or delivery room mishap.

Lol yeah I would agree with you, the only reason I like that helmet is because of what it could have been. If they would have removed those stupid califlower extensions on the mouth, and made the forehead portion slant backwards instead of frontwards, then it would have been an AMAZING helmet.

Especially with those illuminated eye slits for the eyes.

But as it stands now, its these changes that make this helmet a truly failed attempt at making a cool helmet.

It really surprises me, I don't know who they have making these design choices, but they need to have him/her revisit their concept of cool/epic sci-fi construction. Cuz this aint it.

Addendum: I'm sure that whoever is making these types of decisions is/are a very talented and hard working dev(s), but still, these were extremely poor design choices.

I agree with the op, it's because of the crap helmet looks in the cutscenes that the only helmet I use is the kuwashii visor, plus the headshot bonus make it one of the best helmets in the game IMO, at least for soldier and infiltrator classes.

Kestrel helmet looks cool, just could have a hard piece on the mouth when in hazardous enviroment to avoid automatically swith to the standard N7 helmet.

Capacitor is really wierd, Jimmy Neutron's helmet lol.

Man I found another example of an amazing helmet design style that also incorporates the collapsible helmets concept and also a more traditional sci-fi looking rifle, that if made with collapsing structures would also look amazing imho.
